maltatoday WEDNESDAY 20 DECEMBER 2017 Sport 22 PARALYMPIC gold medallist Oscar Pistorius has appealed to South Africa's highest court to cut the sentence he got for murdering his girlfriend, legal documents showed yesterday. Pistorious was jailed for six years for shooting dead Reeva Steenkamp - but prosecutors argued that it was "shockingly lenient" and an appeals court agreed last month to more than double the term to 15 years. Pistorius filed documents to the Constitutional Court on Monday challenging the ap- peals court's ruling. The judgement, he argued, disregarded material find- ings of the trial court, which showed "compelling circum- stances justifying a departure from the prescribed minimum sentence". Fifteen years is the minimum usually given for murder. Pistorius said this was in breach of his constitutional right to a fair trial and sen- tencing. When asked about Pistorius' appeal, Steenkamp's family spokeswoman Tania Koen said: "It's his legal right to do so and we have to re- spect the legal process. It is what it is." Legal analysts have said such as appeal to the Con- stitutional Court had slim chances of success. Pistorius' family spokesman was not available to comment. Rights groups in a country beset by high levels of violent crime against women say Pis- torius has received preferen- tial treatment compared to non-whites and those without his wealth or celebrity status. Although in jail, Pistorius has remained in the news. He suffered a bruise in a fight with another inmate after tak- ing too long on a phone call, a prison spokesman said. ATHLETICS FOOTBALL Pistorius asks South Africa's top court to cut sentence West Ham's Moyes says he can manage any club in the world WEST Ham United manager David Moyes believes he is good enough to manage any team in the world and is keen to prove his capability at the Premier League club this sea- son. The Scot, who spent 11 years in charge of Everton before unsuccessful spells at Man- chester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland, was named West Ham boss in November after the club sacked Slaven Bilic. Moyes has set about repairing his reputation while also help- ing the London side regroup after a poor start to the season. The Hammers are unbeaten in three games going into Satur- day's league clash with New- castle United at home. "I think I'm capable of do- ing the job at any club in the world so I'm sure I can do it at West Ham," Moyes said. West Ham, who were in the relega- tion zone when Moyes took over, have climbed to 15th in the table with 17 points after four wins, five draws and nine draws while Newcastle are 18th. "I have to come here and show I can do it. You have to come and show what you can do. Your reputation doesn't stand for anything," he added.
