maltatoday WEDNESDAY 21 MARCH 2018 Sport 22 MOTORSPORTS Leo Butler wins the 2018 Small Cars Demolition ON Sunday 25th March 2018 Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi will continue the Honda National Motocross Champi- onship 2017/2018. They will be competing in the fourth com- petition of this 2017-2018 sea- son. The day's program starts at 10am at the ASMK Race tracks. Meanwhile on Sunday 18th March 2018 the Association organised the seventh program of the 2017/2018 Autocross Na- tional Championship sponsored by the firm Pasta Poiatti. On this day 17 competitors divided into two classes were registered and had the following results. The Modified class of Class A Final was won by Vince Farru- gia on his Volkswagen Polo. He was followed by Karl Micallef on a Ford Fiesta and Andrew Pisani on a Vuaxhall Nova. Fourth and fifth places were won by Noel Zammit on a Fiat Punto and Keith Borg on a Vauxhall Nova. The Modified Class B race Final was won by Ryan Scicluna on Ford Fiesta followed by Bran- don Lee Vassallo on a Peugoet 205 while the Standard Class was again won by Deane Farru- gia on his Citroen AX. He was followed by Jerome Peplow on a Kia Avella and Chris Formosa on a Ford Fiesta. Fourth and fifth placed were Nicovich Chir- cop on Peugoet 106 and Kyle Agius on his Renault 5 Campus. The program of the day came to an end with the Demolition Derby for small cars (those that are no longer than four metres long). On the registration day 41 competitor made it on the Reg- istration List but on the eve of the race day only 34 car drivers were eligible and participated. These 34 cars were driven by: Lucas Vassallo, Wayne Mallia, Frank Butler, Matthew Mallia, Charles Falzon, Andy Busuttil, Karl Mizzi, Fernando Cremona, Clayton Gravina, Philip Man- gion, Jurgen Azzopardi, Chris- tian Cremona, Daniel Gauci Borda, Edward Zammit, Kyran Mascari, Justin James Grima, Brian Lawrence Mascari, Lar- kin Butler, Jonathan Abela, Leo Butler, Jonathan Galea, Shaun Pulis, Carmelo Mallia, Matthew Attard, Andre Cassar, Marlon Caruana, Jeff Borg, Joseph Cas- sar, Oliver Camilleri, Breton Gilford, Thomas Galea, Mas- simo Borg, Michael Delia and Joshua Peplow. These competi- tors participated on various car models including: Maruti, Rov- er, Lada, Skoda, Peugeot, Hyun- dai, Volvo, Polski Fiat, Seat, Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Fiat Punto, Fiat Marbella, Opel Corsa, Kia Avella, Renault Clio, Mitsubishi Colt and Mazda 323. As the Start Flag dropped all the cars started to make two exhibition runs on the wet oval track. This was the last trip for these cars before all will be sent to be recycled in a metal scrap depot. Following these two laps the drivers began banging each other and in the meantime they were doing their best so their cars would survive the racing punishment of the Demoli- tion Derby. For the total of the 40 minutes of this Demolition Derby Race the drivers of these cars that did not exceed four metres (13 ft) in length and which were of different makes, did their best so that their vehi- cles would continue to operate despite the voluntary collisions made in accordance strict game regulations. The battle finished between the last two cars one driven by Fernado Cremona on his Peugeot 205 who was partic- ipating for the first time and Leo Butler on a Lada Samara who was driving his 21st competi- tion. These last two cars were to determine the Winner and the Runner-Up. So far it was clear that Cre- mona had his vehicle working a little better to that of Butler where the latter had the car almost shutting down several times. Although Cremona stood a greater chance to try to stop Butler's car, he could not take advantage of the situation as his car was severely damaged at the back including locked rear wheels. The game came to the Finish when Cremona's en- gine came to a halt while Leo's car was still moving slowly on its own power. Thus the main referee Johann Pace waved the Chequered Flag on Leo's Lada as the 2018 Small Cars Demo- lition Winner and secondly on Fernando's Peugeot 205 as the Runner-up. Both competitors shock hands as their supporters cheered. The Association informs the public that the next Demoli- tion is one for vans and it is expected to take place during a night event on Saturday 28 July 2018. The Administration states that the particular Rules for this type of Vans Demolition will be made public in the coming days.
