Does the ultimate manifestation of human ingenuity stand in los- ing the power to shape our own destinies? And, if this is indeed where we're headed, who will command the shift?". APRIL 18 Salvage and Salvation: Bookbindings as Agents Public talk on the art of book- binding by Professor Nicholas Pickwoad at Lecture Theatre 2, University of Malta, Tal-Qroqq. The making of books in the ear- ly modern period was a highly commercial activity and the need to cut costs is evidenced by the widespread use of recycled materials, particularly pieces of parchment, paper and leath- er salvaged from a myriad of other uses in libraries, archives and daily life. In this way, bind- ers preserved material that had been thrown away or otherwise discarded, much of it of histori- cal interest, some of it of great cultural importance. Professor Pickwoad trained in bookbind- ing and book conservation with Roger Powell, and ran his own workshop from 1977 to 1989, and has been Adviser on book conservation to the National Trust since 1978. STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL APRIL 8 Festa Frawli The festival, now in its 11th year, is very popular among the Maltese and takes place in the main square outside the Parish Church in Mġarr, an agricultural village on the north side of the island. Mġarr is renowned for its excellent quality strawberries, which boast a unique sweet taste. As the festival approaches the Mġarr locals eagerly prepare for the much awaited event. Thou- sands of strawberries are picked, prepared and packed. Children rehearse for performances to be staged on the church square and attractive stalls are set up to wel- come Maltese visitors and for- eigners alike.
