Home fans streamed out of the Bet365 Stadium immediately after Patrick van Aanholt's win- ner, with long-time chairman Peter Coates looking on miser- ably. The afternoon had started far better for the hosts. Manager Paul Lambert - ap- pointed in January to turn the Potters around - had celebrated wildly with Xherdan Shaqiri after the midfielder's free-kick opened the scoring just before the break. But James McArthur skipped clear down the left and side- footed home the leveller, before Van Aanholt pounced on Ryan Shawcross' under-hit backpass to consign Stoke to the second tier. The Potters' players - who finished 13th last season - col- lapsed to the turf as a first top- f light relegation since 1985 sank in. Crystal Palace's Mamadou Sakho was one of a number of visiting players to console their opponents after the final whistle, with goalkeeper Jack Butland in tears as some of the remaining home supporters de- fiantly chanted their lifelong al- legiance to the club. Before kick-off, a fan implored the rest of the Bet365 Stadium to do "whatever it takes" for vic- tory over the public address sys- tem. The crowd responded with incessant noise, but - for the vast majority of the match - the Stoke attack was too quiet. As so often, it was only when Shaqiri got on the ball that the hosts looked able to unpick the opposition defence. The Switzerland internation- al's cross was headed weakly wide by Mame Biram Diouf in Stoke's best chance before his free-kick found the net with the game's first shot on target. The 26-year-old's pass should have put Badou Ndiaye clean through on goal in the second half, but the Senegal midfielder miscontrolled when a settling second goal beckoned for Stoke. Shaqiri has spoken this season of a "lack of quality" among his team-mates and was planning talks with the Stoke manage- ment in the summer regardless of whether the club had stayed up. Formerly of Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, he will surely be playing top-f light football somewhere next season, with the likes of England internation- al Butland and Wales midfielder Joe Allen also likely to exit. Stoke's 10-year stay in Premier League over TOM Davies' 96th-minute equaliser yes- terday denied Southampton a huge three points in their fight for survival in a 1-1 draw at Everton. Davies' def lected effort, more than 60 seconds after the four minutes of added time had elapsed, was not enough to save Sam Allardyce from a chorus of boos at the full-time whistle at the end of a f lat performance from the hosts. Nathan Redmond, a half-time substitute, had turned Cedric's cross beyond Jordan Pickford from close range (57) with a goal which looked like it would earn the Saints a valuable, and rare, away win. The visitors had looked like keeping Ever- ton at bay even after Maya Yoshida was sent off with five minutes remaining until Davies' heartbreaking late strike, which leaves Southampton outside the relegation zone on goal difference ahead of a trip to 18th-placed Swansea on Tuesday night. SIR Alex Ferguson, who led Manchester United to 38 trophies during 26 years in charge, has had emergency surgery yes- terday for a brain haemorrhage. A United statement said the procedure "had gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery". Ferguson, 76, retired as United manager in May 2013. He was recently seen for the United clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford when he presented departing Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger some end-of-season silverware. There were concerns yesterday afternoon when his son Darren Ferguson missed Doncaster's final game of the season against Wigan due to "family reasons". Darren Ferguson was due to be in the dug- out at the Keepmoat Stadium but a Rovers statement read: "Darren asks for privacy, and will provide an update through the club during the week." Tom Davies strikes in added time to deny Saints huge win in survival fight Sir Alex Ferguson: Former Man Utd boss has emergency surgery
