NEWS maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 13 JUNE 2018 DONALD Trump and Kim Jong-un have signed a docu- ment at the end of their talks in Singapore, after the United States President hailed the "his- toric meeting" and the North Korean leader said, "the world will see a major change". Speaking on ABC's 'Good Morning America' yesterday, Trump said the North Korean dictator would be "denuking" his country, and would be starting "very quickly". The signed document in- cludes a pledge from Kim to remove all nuclear weapons from the Korean peninsula. This was the first time a sit- ting US president and a North Korean leader met and nego- tiated, an unprecedented de- velopment after a year of ex- changing threats. In a media conference after the meeting, Trump also an- nounced details not present in the document, saying the US would stop its military exer- cises in South Korea, in what analysts are regarding as a concession. Trump said the document was historic and comprehen- sive, while, in turn, Kim said the pair had agreed to "leave the past behind." Trump spoke of having learnt that Kim was a "very talented man" who loves his country very much. Before the sign- ing, he had said the Singapore summit had gone "better than anybody could have imagined". "We had a really fantastic meeting. A lot of progress," Trump said. "Really very posi- tive. I think better than any- body could have expected. Top of the line. Really good." Just a few months after both leaders exchanged insults and threatened imminent war, the men went out of their way to be gracious. Trump even de- clared it an "honour" to be sit- ting next to the North Korean leader. The one-on-one discussion, which centred on nuclear dis- armament and reducing ten- sions, lasted less than 40 min- utes. The agreement said the US and North Korea would co- operate to achieve "new rela- tions", while America would provide North Korea with "se- curity guarantees". Kim also reaffirmed his "firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula" Observers, however, say the document lacks substance, especially regarding the way in which the promised denu- clearisation would happen.
