17 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 19 SEPTEMBER 2018 COMMERCIAL FIFTEEN renal patients have been fi- nancially assisted by LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation to go on a pilgrimage to Lourdes. They joined a group organised by Assocjazzjoni Volontarji Lourdes (AVL), consisting of over 160 other per- sons including other patients, relatives, doctors, nurses, carers, and helpers in- cluding 14 youths. This spiritual jour- ney was led by Archbishop Emeritus Pawlu Cremona. While in Lourdes, the patients took part in all religious functions includ- ing the adoration of the Holy Eucharist, the International Mass, and the aux flambeaux evening procession. Other celebrations were also organised in the Maltese language. Alan Curry, founder of LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation said: "On behalf of all renal patients, LifeCyle Foundation would like to thank AVL as well as the nursing and caring team at Renal Unit, AirMalta and Malta International Air- port (MIA) for their kind support, espe- cially towards renal patients, who have to carry with them special life-saving di- alysis equipment to assist them in their condition even when they are away from Malta." AVL Chairperson Louise Cini thanked LifeCycle for their ongoing support year after year. "Every year, AVL receives much needed support both at depar- ture and arrival in Malta, as well as dur- ing the flights. AirMalta and MIA staff ensure that all of us receive the much- needed logistical support during such pilgrimages." Through its Foster Clark LifeCycle Challenge 2018 to be held between 28 September and 12 October 2018, Life- Cycle Foundation is aiming to raise the substantial sum of €150,000 to sustain both its current and new projects for 2018-2019. In those 10 days, LifeCyclists will be cycling 2,000 km from Dubai to Salalah, in Southern Oman in blistering heat – all to raise much needed money for renal patients. Apart from life-saving dialysis equip- ment and improved facilities, LifeCycle is sponsoring the Twilight Shift Van to transport patients to and from Mater Dei Hospital for their evening dialysis, as well as the software matching programme called "Traccia" which determines the best recipient for a kidney donation. This event was organ- ised by Leo Groendijk, an external expert from Van Hall Larenstein Univer- sity of Applied Sciences (Leeuwarden, Nether- lands) as part of the Eras- mus + KA2 project enti- tled 'Connect 2018'. The latter aims to con- nect professionals and students from the two European Capital of Cul- ture cities for 2018. This training pro- gramme is a first for MCAST and aims to sup- port the college's inter- ests in water by providing four micro-wastewater treatment systems and training material to be used by MCAST lectur- ers during the course of their work. As part of the training course, a competitive challenge was organ- ized during which par- ticipants were asked to develop different micro- wastewater systems. A small token was awarded to the winners. Apart from working as a lecturer, Groendijk is the founding member for the Dutch NGO 'waterforev- eryone' (http://waterfor- everyone.nl/). This NGO works on providing technological solutions and education to ensure that people in poor countries would have access to drinking water. THOMAS Smith Group will be one of the main sponsors for this year's Cultural Events Brand Mal- ta (CEB) event entitled Electrify- ing Birgu this Saturday at the War Museum in Vittoriosa. Electrifying Birgu promises to be bigger and better than its predeces- sor. Once again buskers and a varie- ty of renowned Maltese and foreign street entertainers and musicians will be performing throughout the evening. On the main stage Red Electrick will perform a one-hour show, while off stage, international, award winning magician and escapolo- gist Tony Roberts will entertain the public with his magic stunts. Joe Gerada, Thomas Smith Group Managing Director, said "This is the first time Thomas Smith is sup- porting CEB. The event is an incredible oppor- tunity for the island to showcase some of its best cultural locations that often go unnoticed, while bringing street artists, musicians and lovers of culture together. We are thrilled with the evolution of the event, and hope it can become a yearly date in people's diaries."
