maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 31 OCTOBER 2018 21 SPORTS FOOTBALL TENNIS SPORTS SNOOKER RICHARD Gasquet set up a second-round clash with de- fending champion Jack Sock as he defeated Denis Shapovalov at the Rolex Paris Masters on Monday. The Frenchman saw off Cana- da's Shapovalov 6-4 7-6 (7-3) in an hour and 39 minutes. Meanwhile, Serbia's Filip Kra- jinovic, last year's beaten final- ist, made a first-round exit as he lost 7-5 6-2 to Russian Karen Khachanov, who will now face lucky loser Matthew Ebden. Khachanov was due to play Kyle Edmund but the match was revised after the event tweeted to say the Briton had withdrawn from the final Masters tourna- ment of the year. Second seed Novak Djokovic's opponent in round two will be Joao Sousa after the Portuguese qualifier beat Italy's Marco Cec- chinato 7-5 6-3. And for fourth-seeded Alex- ander Zverev and fifth-seeded Marin Cilic it will be Frances Tiafoe and Philipp Kohlschreib- er respectively. Tiafoe got past Nicolas Mahut in straight sets, while Kohlschreiber came from behind to triumph against Rob- in Haase. Feliciano Lopez was another qualifier to get through, beating Alex De Minaur, and Nikoloz Basilashvili, Roberto Bautista Agut, Adrian Mannarino and Damir Dzumhur also pro- gressed. Richard Gasquet advances at Paris Masters WORLD number one Mark Selby pro- gressed to the third round of the Inter- national Championship yesterday as he beat Robert Milkins 6-4. Selby has struggled for consistency so far this season, losing early at the Eng- lish Open, but he opened up against The Milkman with a break of 57. Milkins levelled but Selby responded with back-to-back century breaks of 102 and 131. The former world champion made it 4-1 before Milkins finally knocked in a ton of his own with a break of 112 and he then closed the gap to 4-3. However, Selby held his nerve to se- cure the last two frames he needed to make it into the next round where he will face the winner of the match between Ian Burns and Stuart Car- rington. Earlier in the day tenth seed Mark Allen knocked in a tournament-high break of 146 on his way to a 6-3 victory over Hossein Vafaei. Judd Trump is also through after he beat Michael Holt 6-1 but fifth seed Barry Hawkins is out following a 6-3 defeat to Martin Gould. Trump will face Yan Bingtao in the next round after he defeated Ryan Day 6-5. International Championship Mark Selby sees off Robert Milkins
