14 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 11 AUGUST 2019 TRAVEL THE island of Ibiza has a reputation for being the clubbing capital of the world. While the party scene is certainly raging and the island's diverse mix of clubs exceeds the expectations of mu- sic lovers and party goers, there's an even better side to Ibiza than this; its unbelievable natural beauty and sense of tranquility… with its endless mar- kets, quaint bakeries and stunning beaches, Ibiza offers something for everyone. Here are the things you must look out for. Sant Llorenc de Balafia An extraordinary charming and tranquil spot and the perfect exam- ple of remote rural life on the island. A church dominates the town, which happens to be its main feature. There's a village school and two restaurants that cater for locals and visitors. The oldest part of the village was declared as a Cultural interest by the Consell Insular D'Eivissa and Formentera on 17 December 1996. It is formed by a group of seven rural houses and two towers with an entire construction of approximately 110m high. There are no shops so plan ahead if you're head- ing there for the stay. Views out across the rugged interior of the island are beautiful. Sunset from Torre Des Savinar (Pirate Tower) The watchtower with the most spec- tacular landscape in Ibiza. It is located at 200m in Punta de Oliva and facing the islets of Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell, and the peak of Puig de Sa Capelleta, from which the Island of Formentera can be seen. It was constructed in 1763 to safeguard Ibiza's southern flank from pirate attacks: it's also known as Torre d'en Pirata. The tower is a 10-minute walk uphill from the main Es Vedrà viewpoint, in the island's far southwest. Castell de Eivissa Head up to Castell de Eivissa for an up-close look at some impressive ar- chitecture, a bit of history, and com- manding views over the town and harbour. Ibiza's semi-derelict castle is an assortment of historical buildings constructed over a 1000-year period, including the Moorish-era Tower of Homage, the former governor's resi- dence, the 8th-century Almudaina and, on the western side, infantry bar- racks from the 18th century. The UNESCO World Heritage Site fortification looks much like it did when it was constructed in the 12th century. Today, though, restaurants, art gal- leries, and craft shops can be found among the gates and bastions of the castle walls. Hippy Market Punta Arabi One of the island's top attractions and a must-see for every holidaymak- er. Countless stalls huddle beneath the shade of pine trees on lots of winding paths between white bungalows. Here you will find items from all over the world, most of which are handmade. It includes a kids' area where they can make their own souvenirs as well as several bars and restaurants offering a lively atmosphere with live music, food and drinks.
