Sources close to the government told MaltaToday that Muscat spoke to his deputy Chris Fearne, Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg, and Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi after they scaled up their personal campaigns over the summer months. "The Prime Minister re- turned from his summer holiday to find the ministers in an overdrive of self-promo- tion. This irked Joseph Muscat and he told them to rein in their campaigns," the sources said. Muscat had been urged by his close aides to nip the campaigning in the bud because it was creating anxiety with the party delegates who were being hounded by the candi- dates. The Prime Minister's 'message' led to the immediate closure last week of two Facebook groups that served as cam- paign platforms for Borg and Mizzi. The Facebook groups – Getting Things Done and the Konrad Ef- fect, extoling Borg's and Mizzi's work respectively – appeared to have upped the ante as rumours swirled that Muscat would use the Budget to announce his depar- ture. MaltaToday is informed that contracting parties, which include Tunisia and Malta, will be asked to accede to a management action plan for the use of the kannizzati, technically called Fishing Aggre- gating Devices (FADs), so that they can be identified better. The plan would allow better knowledge on the impact of FADs on dolphin fish (lampuki), but also allow the GFCM to "freeze" the number of FADs during a transi- tional period so that it can regu- late better the fishing practice and resolve the fishing dispute. MaltaToday last Sunday brought to the fore complaints by fisher- men who said they have been at- tacked by Tunisian fishers who were stealing their lampuki catch- es (see page 6). The issue was also brought to the Commission's attention first by MEP candidate Peter Agius in 2018, and last week by Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba, who add- ed his voice to the concerns about Maltese fishermen. 6 PHOTO ZAK FARRUGIA
