43 maltatoday, Sunday, 16 February 2014 Events Vodafone Malta Marathon The restoration of the Delimara Light- house, a project undertaken by Din l-Art Helwa and supported by Gasan- Mamo Insurance and planned in three phases, with the final aim that of offer- ing visitor accomodation in a historic site has now come to an end. Built in 1854, the Delimara Lighthouse has served as a beacon to shipping as well as a landmark of British architecture in the southernmost tip of Malta. "It was very difficult to understand the amount of work and time required to bring the lighthouse back to its former glory, but once we did we knew that this would be a great project to embark on," said Julian J Mamo, Managing Director at GasanMamo. "Seeing the lighthouse resorted and back to its fromer glory makes every penny and the the time spent on the restoration worthwhile." The first phase of the restoration in- volved the restoration of the exterior of the lighthouse and included repair- ing the damage to the walls, the roof and the tower. All cement accretions added in previous years were removed and the mortar joints were plastered with a hydraulic lime-based mix. The external apertures required extensive maintenance and any missing timber apertures were replaced. The second phase involved internal works such as plumbing and electricity, maintenance of internal apertures and the installa- tion of a kitchen and bathrooms. The first two phases were completed by the first months of 2008. The third and last phase which took 5 years in total, included the restoration of the light mechanism and its housing, gass prisms and lantern mechanism. Stanley Farrugia Randon, Din l-Art Helwa Council Member, thanked Gas- anmamo for their interest and generos- ity throughout the whole restoration project and urged other companies to follow in GasanMamo's footsteps of giving a helping hand to the restoration of such jewels present around the Mal- tese Islands. The Malta Marathon this year is being brought to you by Vodafone as the main sponsor of the event, hence it is being dubbed the Vo- dafone Malta Marathon, and will take place on 23 February. The sponsoring of such an event is a milestone in itself for Vodafone Malta. Indeed it is a 'first' for the company and testimony to its firm belief in the values of achievement and success. This is the embodi- ment of the Marathon. Thou- sands from all walks of life and all ages making it to the finish line in an act of personal achievement, many doing it for a good cause. The official charity this year is Inspire. Runners are being urged to collect money for this charity thus adding even more value to their feat. Any event of this size is complex in its organisation and logistical set up. It takes months to organise the event which would not be possible without the hundreds of people that work toward its success. This also includes a number of Official Part- ners which are San Michel, Pow- erade, Urban Jungle and The Villa. The event is a national sporting celebration with as much activ- ity along the route as on the route. Twenty five Bands will be lining the route as will the various voluntary organisations that have become a mainstay of each marathon. The feeling of any marathon is electric. It's a family day out and a time for coming together to celebrate the strength of the human spirit. The finish line is particularly exciting. Once again there will be a large crowd cheering on the 3,600 which will cross the finish line – some in better shape than others but cross- ing anyway. This is the beauty of the marathon, it doesn't matter how long it takes you to cross the finish line. The thrill of crossing is unparalleled and as emotional for those who watch it happen. The Vodafone Malta Marathon will once again go viral this year. Each participant can enjoy the benefits of technology whilst run- ning. At each step of the way our photographers are at hand and any photos taken of participants can be automatically uploaded to their Fa- cebook page in real time. Follow- ing the marathon has never been such fun. Monitor your husband, your girlfriend, your dad or friend at each step of the way and keep it for posterity. Overall, the Marathon is set to be a very special event. Whether you choose to follow it along the route, or at the finish line or on Facebook you will no doubt feel a part of this annual event. The collection came to light during the artist's time as a student at the Royal College of Art in London, reflecting a period of ex- perimentation and investigation us- ing print. New works are also part of the exhibition. Conceived by Aristotle, the term Peripeteia defines a reversal of cir- cumstance or turning point in a narrative. Each work in this exhibi- tion attempts to present the viewer with a juncture. Orme's muddled tableaus, while alluding to allegory, are obscured by duplicity. The in- fluence of collage on Orme's print is particularly evident in 'The Boy I Love is Up in the Gallery' (2010). Unconventional in its composition, the lino-print marks an uncomfort- able division between the conjurer and the audience, a relationship Orme describes as "the moment of revelation". While some works im- ply a story or suggest a theme, other works evolve into precarious, holistic arrangements, fragmented and more abstracted. The delicate process of cutting and pasting these hiero- glyphic sections suggests vulnerability and a sense of transience. Curator and owner of Stu- dio 104 Michelle Morrissey is keen to promote print as a fine art medium in Malta, alongside the launch of her forthcoming print work- shops. Orme's exhibition highlights compositional techniques within print and collage works. The col- lages can be seen to inform print and vice versa. Aesthetics also shift as different print methods are ex- plored, such as lithography, lino cut and screen print. "My time at the Royal College of Art was valuable. It allowed me the intellectual space and technical re- sources to scrutinise my work and develop my practice," Orme said. Born in 1977, the artist spent his infancy on Canvey Island. Isolated from the mainland by a series of creeks, Canvey was a curious set- ting, prone to flooding. As a child, he would make small books, sta- pling together pocket-sized sheets of paper to draw a story. Invariably each story remained incomplete and imponderable, perhaps indica- tive of a general uncertainty. "I continue to employ these strate- gies in my work, incorporating con- temporary themes of anxiety and personal experience," he added. The exhibition, at Studio 104 Fine Art Space in St Lucy Street, Val- letta, runs until 8 March On Friday 31 January 2014 the Asso- ciation des Professeurs de Français de Malte (APFM) held its 5th Gen- eral Assembly. Michel Vandepoort- er, Ambassador of France in Malta honoured the Assembly with his presence. Monsieur Laurent Croset, Cultural Counsellor at the French Embassy in Malta and Cecilia Borg were also present. The President of the APFM, Angèle Vella Lauwers, presented a report in which she listed the main activities organised by the committee during 2013 and announced the upcoming events for the current year. Prizes and certificates for the competi- tions entitled 'Bienvenue à…' and 'Chantons en français' were given to the teachers whose students par- ticipated in the competitions during the ceremony. After the ceremony a reception was held to mark the fifth anniversary of the APFM. The APFM is affiliated to the Commission de l'Europe de l'Ouest and the Fédération Internationale des Professeurs de Français. Com- posed of 100 members, the associa- tion strives to promote the teaching of the French language, culture and civilization. Teacher training ses- sions and other activities targeting teachers and students alike are or- ganised on a regular basis. In fact, on the 3 and 4 March, teachers will be taking part in a number of training courses organ- ized by the APFM in collaboration with the French Embassy. Further- more, the APFM is currently work- ing on a soirée musico-littéraire which will be held on the 21 March to commemorate the 70th anni- versary of the death of the writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. During the soirée prizes will be awarded to the winners of a competition for University and Sixth Form students organized by the APFM to celebrate the occasion.
