58 ONE hundred twenty three ath- letes were on the starting line of the fourth race of the Birkirka- ra St. Joseph Sports Club Open Water Swimming Championship held on Wednesday 15th July in St. Paul's Bay. Although sea conditions seemed to be perfect at glance the registered timings were slightly slower than usual meaning that the conditions were quite decep- tive and underwater currents hindered athletes' speed. In the males category Agius, took first place, after having had a bit of a shaky start in the Championship, with a time of 26 minutes and 14 seconds. Sec- ond placed was Luke Camilleri Cuschieri who has won the first three races this year. Camilleri Cuschieri clocked in at 26 min- utes 41 seconds. Third placed was Richard Zerafa in 27 min- utes 22 seconds. No changes were registered in the females' podium where Sa- rah Demicoli continued to show her dominance clocking a time of 27 minutes 56 seconds. Sec- ond placed Hannah Pace, fresh from her bronze medal winning performance in the European Triathlon Championship came in 29 minutes and six seconds. Leah Satariano secured the third place on the podium, registering an improvement of 41 seconds on her best time to finish the race in 32 minutes 7 seconds. With two races left for the end of the Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club Open Water Swim- ming Championship Demicoli seems to be the favourite to win the championship whilst in the Males' category a battle between Agius and Camilleri Cuschieri is expected, though the latter is more likely to win the Champi- onships in view of the gap he has managed to achieve from Agius in the overall classification. The next Race of the Champi- onship will be held on Wednes- day 5th August and will consist of a 4k swim. Race will be held in St. Paul's Bay at 5pm.
