The 35-year-old American be- came the ninth woman to chalk up 700 victories since tennis turned professional in 1968 but still has a long way to go to catch all-time leader Martina Navratilova (1,442). "I'm glad nobody told me be- fore, I would have been a little bit nervous," Williams said. "It was a good match, she's a qual- ity player." Two other former world number ones did not fare so well. Denmark's Caroline Wozni- acki was beaten 1-6 6-4 7-6 (6) by Anna Karolina Schmiedlova after blowing a 6-1 4-1 lead in a marathon match that lasted almost three hours. "I'm very, very happy and very, very tired right now," said Slo- vak Schmiedlova. Belarussian Victoria Azaren- ka was another early casualty, retiring from her match with Britain's Johanna Konta because of a leg injury while trailing 6-4 1-0. Venus Williams of the U.S. plays against Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska during their women's singles match at the Wuhan Open tennis tourna- ment, Hubei province, China, Sharapova's return from injury cut short by wrist trouble MARIA Sharapova's return from injury after an almost three-month break was cut short on Monday after the world number three suffered a wrist injury at the Wuhan Open in China. The Russian, who missed the entire US hardcourt season with a leg injury, was into a deciding set against Czech player Barbora Strycova when she called for the trainer. Despite playing on for another couple of games she quit while leading 7-6(1) 6-7(4) 2-1. "I got pain in my left forearm. It just got worse and worse as I continued," said Sharapova. "I just don't think it's smart to continue trying to run around the court and trying to hit forehands from the backhand side and compensate other things. "I haven't played a match in many months. I guess this is the consequence of that. I just have to work on getting it better." The former world number one had not played a match since losing to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semi-finals in July. Maria Sharapova
