22 The Malta Weightlifting As- sociation (MWA) organized the Malta National Championship on Sunday, 15 November at the Cottonera Sports Complex. The first competition of the championship consisted of Under 13 boys and girls. The first place in the boy's category was won by Rylee Borg 116 points followed by Kyle Camilleri 97 points and Kayden Psaila 81 points. Many of the athletes were their first com- petition experience where they gave very good performance to- gether with great technique. In second group consisted of female athletes, with the best re- sults coming from Pamela Psaila winning the overall group, she lifted a total of 134kg, as well as setting two national records in the 63kg category, she was fol- lowed by Nathalie Borg with 107kg. The 69kg category was won by Yazmine Zammit Stevens by lift- ing the total of 124kg. In this cat- egory guest athlete Chole Cassar had an excellent performance lift- ing the total of 139kg. Other positive results came from elisa Scicluna, who totaled 120kg and Kristen Borg with a to- tal of 94kg. Good performance from two new comers Sarah Shawky with a total of 71kg and Shazel Guzman 15 year athlete with the total of 67kg. The third competition of the event was much fiercer than ex- pected; the male athletes gave their best performance yet: With the best results coming from Kyle Micallef winning the overall, he lifted a total of 261kg, as well as setting new national records in the 85kg category with 121kg Snatch, this record was unbeat- able for these past 9 years. In second place Rodmar Pulis with the total of 246kg and Matthew Camilleri 217kg. The 94kg category was won by Ryan Agius with the total of 236kg followed by Anton Micallef with the total of 204kg. Martin Pisani claimed 1st place in the 105+kg with the total of 238kg. The men youth category was won by Owen Bugeja with the total of 197kg in the 85kg category and Andy Grech 169kg in the 77kg category. The competitions were refereed by three female officials, Ramona Borg, Rodienne Balzan and Gayle Caruana, they were assisted by Alfred ellul Mercer and Stephen Borg. After these nationals the MWA technical committee will select the teams to prepare for the next international competitions next year. After the excellent performance of Kyle Micallef he won the place to represent Malta in the Qatar International next December. maltatoday, Wednesday, 18 november 2015 Sport weightlifting Kyle Micallef sets new national record Kyle Micallef Pamela Psaila Women's water polo national team attend training camp in Sicily water polo The women's water polo national team, coached by Anthony Far- rugia, have just returned from a training camp in Ortigia, Sicily. During this camp the team had joint training sessions with the home team as well as friendly matches. They also travelled to Catania where they played against L'Orizzonte who are the U/18 champions of Italy. The team was composed of the following players: Abby Bonello (eXI), Michela Bonello Ghio (NeP), elena Borg (eXI), Louise Cachia (SLM), Karla Camilleri (eXI), Sophie Camilleri (NeP), Ana Culic (SLM), Carla engerer (SLM), Lisa Fenech (SLM), Sasha Lecuyer (eXI), Denise Micallef (SGN), Letizia Millo (SGN), Ken- dra Navarro (NeP), Michela Zam- mit (eXI) and Francesca Paolella (SLM). This training camp served to give the girls international expo- sure and gauge their strengths and weaknesses against stronger opposition. Between the 1st and 3rd April 2016, the Junior Women Nation- al team will be participating in the eU Nations Water Polo Cup which is being held in Odense, Denmark. The final selection for this competition will be made by Anthony Farrugia, together with head Coach Karl Izzo, closer to the competition. Following the success of the men's Junior and Senior National Teams, the ASA, together with the National Coaches, felt it was the right time to form the wom- en's water polo national team with the aim to attract more females to the sport and to work towards obtaining positive international results thus emulating their male counterparts. The squad will continue their preparation for the eU Nations competition with intensive train- ing both in and out of the pool. They are also participating (out of competition) in the U/15 and U/17 Winter water polo competi- tions. The women's national water polo team
