45 Events maltatoday, SUNDAY, 8 MAY 2016 Marsovin plants the Chenin Blanc grape variety at their Marnisi Estate MARSOVIN'S Marnisi Estate, is reputed for growing noble red grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Caber- net Franc. The winery has now decided to diversify the style of wines offered from this estate with the introduction of a white grape variety: Chenin Blanc. "This is the very first time that a white grape variety has ever been planted on this estate. We are excited with the new project the winery has embarked on and we are committed to pro- vide the market with wines of the highest quality and Maltese expression," Marsovin CEO, Jeremy Cassar said. "Growing Chenin Blanc, a variety that shows great char- acter even when grown in hot climates such as ours, on an estate which has proven to grow very good quality grapes will help in- crease our selection of pre- mium white wines available for both the Maltese and tour- ists visiting our Islands." The Marnisi Estate, which is privately owned and managed by the winery, is known for pro- ducing Maltese premium wines Antonin Red and Marnisi Red, with over 55,000 vines grown over 67 tumoli of land. Another 6 tumoli of land has been dedicated to the growth of the new grape variety. Chenin Blanc is a vari- ety which originates from the Loire Valley in France, it's naturally high levels of acidity make it an ideal vari- ety to grow in warmer climates such as Malta, and nonethe- less still hold a very pleasant aromatic character. This vari- ety has been planted in various vineyards across Malta since the early 1970's, it can produce par- ticularly good wines when yields are limited and well maintained through suited practices of viti- culture. The now one month old Chenin Blanc vines will give its first vintage in the year 2019 as the vine needs time to develop before producing fruit of good enough quality for wine mak- ing. Composed by Antonio Oli- vari, the man behind the band 'Mistura', with lyrics inspired from a chanson – which is the lifeline and focus of attention in the novel 'Iż-Żeffiena tal-Keru- bini' by Carlo O. D'Emanuele – has taken a life of its own. With Larissa Borg as the per- former, a singer well-known for her jazzy voice and burlesque attitude, it is a perfect combina- tion of class and elegance that has taken this chanson to a new level in the artistic scene. The venue was the cinema at Spazju Kreattiv, St. James Cava- lier, where a blend of new pro- jects and creative outputs were used to make this launch a great evening. Actor Nadia Grech and dancer Sharon Muscat accompanied Larissa with their talent in a combination of creative narra- tive and original visual material. "This chanson is a gift to all the readers of my books who support my work and my creativity. It is an honour and privilege for me to give something in return after the same book was shortlisted for the National Book Prize", D'Emanuele said. 'Parfum' is produced by Neomax Studios. ECB ends production and issuance of €500 banknotes THE Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) concluded a review of the de- nominational structure of the Europa series, and decided to permanently stop producing the €500 banknote and to ex- clude it from the series, taking into account concerns that this banknote could facilitate illicit activities. The issuance of the €500 will be stopped around the end of 2018, when the €100 and €200 banknotes of the Europa series are planned to be introduced. The other denominations – from €5 to €200 – will remain in place. In view of the international role of the euro and the widespread trust in its banknotes, the €500 will remain legal tender and can therefore continue to be used as a means of payment and store of value. The Eurosystem, which comprises the ECB and the euro area national central banks, will take steps to ensure that the remaining denominations are available in sufficient quantities. The €500 banknote, like the other denominations of euro banknotes, will always retain its value and can be exchanged at the national central banks of the Eurosystem for an unlimited period of time.
