Indeed, wherever remnants of old-growth maquis survive around the Mediterranean, lentisk (M: deru) is often one of the dominant vegetation species. Malta too had many such lush thickets once, but people cleared them virtually all, for firewood or to make space for pasture and agriculture; and their goats ensured the vegetation never recovered. Now the goats are largely gone and in places the hardy lentisk is making a gradual comeback. Woodland projects can speed up the recovery process: at Foresta 2000, for example, several thousand lentisk shrubs have been planted, and it's heart-warming to watch patches of thick maquis reforming. Lentisk are prolific berry-bearers and although still in their teens, the shrubs at Foresta 2000 are already providing shelter and rich pickings for tired and hungry birds coming in from the sea.
