maltatoday, SUNDAY, 2 APRIL 2017 53 FORMULA 1 has reached a "broad agreement" to work to- wards introducing simpler, cheaper and noisier engines from 2021, after the current regulatory cycle comes to an end. Formula 1 has run 1.6-litre V6 power units since 2014, in a push to adopt a 'greener' image, but a meeting was held earlier this week to discuss options beyond 2020. Friday's meeting, chaired by FIA President Jean Todt, was attended by current power unit manu- facturers, as well as automotive manufacturers not currently in- volved in F1. At the end of the meeting, a four-point plan was agreed: - A desire to maintain Formula 1 as the pinnacle of motorsport technology, and as a laboratory for developing technology that is relevant to road cars - Striving for future power units to be powerful, while becoming simpler and less costly to develop and produce - Improving the sound of the power units - A desire to allow drivers to drive harder at all times. "I was very pleased with the process, and the fact that so many different stakeholders were able to agree on a direction for For- mula 1 in such an important technical area," said Todt of the meeting. "Of course, now we must sit down and work through the fine details of exactly what the 2021 power units will be. "But we have begun on the right foot, and I am looking forward to working through the process to come up with the best decision for Formula 1 into the future." Todt recently ruled out a return to V10/12 engines. THE sixth week from the Malta Premier League of Darts took place at the Red Bar in Kalkara which notably saw Albert Scerri booking his place at finals night; Norbert Attard continued his 100% record. A vital win for David Attard which keeps his hope of joining his brother Norbert in the na- tional team scheduled to partici- pate at the Mediterranean cup in May. Albert Scerri v John Agius 4-1 Scerri bounced back to form after two consecutive defeats by comfortably defeating John Agius 4-1. The opening two legs shared with Scerri taking the first and Agius levelling the score up in the second. A tightly contested third leg saw Scerri regaining the lead and from that point onwards there was no way back as he kicked on to win the 4th and 5th leg and another vital win which guarantees a spot at finals night. Despite the defeat, Agius faith is still in his hands because a win next week against Brian Abela would also see him booking his place at finals night and a berth in the national team, something he is yet to achieve. Norbert Attard v Brian Abela 4-0 Six in Six, that is the record N.Attard holds at this edition of the Malta Premier League of Darts. This week he swept past B.Abela 4-0 in no time as he aver- aged over 80.00 for the third time during this competition. Next week Attard is scheduled to play against John Ciantar and a win would see him ending the group stages on a 100% record. David Attard v John Ciantar 4-1 Coming into this must win match both players shared fifth place on a 2-3 record. All square after two legs with Attard open- ing the scoring and Ciantar lev- elling up in the second. Unfor- tunately for him, Ciantar could not kick on from there as the next three legs deservedly all went with D.Attard which ended Cian- tar hopes of making the top four. On the 7th and final group game D.Attard is scheduled to play against G.Abela, with a win for both players required if they are to progress further in this com- petition. Godfrey Abela v Vincent Busuttil 1-4 The last match scheduled for the night saw Busuttil ending a four- game losing streak as he claims his second win of his campaign. On the night G.Abela never got going and found himself trailing 2-0 and despite winning the 3rd leg, the 4th and 5th leg went with veteran Busuttil to end a miser- able night for G.Abela. He will need to put this loss behind him quickly as next week he is sched- uled to play against David Attard in a winner takes it all encounter. Standings: 1st N.Attard (quali- fied) – (6-0) 2nd A.Scerri (quali- fied) – (4-2); 3rd G.Abela – (3-3); 4th J.Agius – (3-3); 5th D.Attard – (3-3); 6th J.Ciantar – (2-4); 7th V.Busutill – (2-4); 8th B.Abela – (1-5).
