maltatoday SUNDAY 11 MARCH 2018 32 This Week WHAT'S ON EXHIBITIONS UNTIL MARCH 29 Ħaġraisland Debut solo show by Isaac Azz- opardi held at the Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo De La Salle, Val- letta. Through the use of con- struction material, appropria- tion and rubbing techniques, the show revolves around three main references: Austin Camill- eri 's installation Stones from 1999, as Maltese contemporary art canon, Anselm Kiefer's ideas about art as alchemy and Mal- ta's changing urbanity. Opening hours are 08.30 – 19.00 (Mon- day to Friday); 08.30 – 13.30 (Saturday). UNTIL APRIL 21 Except for Access Only Exhibition by artist-architect Tom Van Maldaren at Malta Contemporary Art, Valletta. Malderen presents a series of objects that due to denomi- nations of scale, materiality and context sit somewhere be- tween sculptural objects and architectural models - at a juncture between the field of architecture and that of art. While many of the ref lections that have made their way in the exhibition can be traced back to architecture, they feel equally relevant and stimulat- ing when brought into an art context. MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT MARCH 16 Kewn Records Showcase 001 Musical launch event for the newly-minted Kewn Records label at The Garage, Zebbug. Featuring the bands BILA, Krishna and Heart of Dark- ness. Entrance is at €7. Doors open at 21.00. MARCH 17-19 HUSH Original musical written and directed by Denise Mulhol- land, with music and lyrics by Luke Saydon held at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta and performed by Teatru Manoel Youth Thea- tre (TMYT). Gus Nightingale is a little boy from a very fa- mous musical family, but when his mother dies, all music is banned from his house. After he is dreadfully humiliated by The Maestro, Gus decides the safest option is to stop speaking and singing - in effect to HUSH! One day, Gus passes the old music shop and finds it open. Inside, he finds a girl called Clementine Pickles. Clementine shows Gus how it is possible to play beau- tiful music even on broken in- struments but as Gus is leaving, an evil stranger enters the shop, locks Clementine in a cello case, steals her voice & a precious ba- ton! This evil stranger uses the baton to extract sounds from everyone and everything, leav- ing the world a completely silent place. A hush has fallen. A plan unfolds. A voice is forgotten... Show times: 18.00 (March 17); 15.00 and 18.00 (March 18); 10.00 and 12.00 (March 19). The event is organised in collabo- ration with the Valletta 2018 Foundation. MARCH 21 Piano and Strings Classical music concert at the San Anton Palace, Attard at 19:30. Pietro de Maria joins the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra String Quartet to perform two masterpieces of the genre, by Shostakovich and Brahms. The rest of the featured musicians include: Emilia Wiśniewska (violin), Philipp Orlov (violin), Aiveen Gallagher (viola) and Peter Flanagan (cello). They will be performing: Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57 (Dmitri Shos- takovich) and Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34 (Johannes Brahms). Bookings: https:// w w w.showshappening.com. MARCH 22 La Divina Commedia Dante's triptych masterpiece will set the scene for this spe- cial experience bringing to- gether sound, movement and light, with select choreography by Francesca Tranter and tak- ing place at Robert Samut Hall, Floriana at 20.00. With a con- cept by Michelle Castelletti (also serving as Conductor), the concert features the Malta Phil- harmonic Orchestra chamber orchestra and A Cappella Choir. Bookings: w w w.showshappen- ing.com. TODAY Xewwex Exhibition of video animation at Space B of Spazju Kreattiv at St James Cavalier, Valletta by Lisa Iglesias. Iglesias uses an early, labour intensive animation technique to create her videos. The artist composes thousands of individual drawings and collages on paper that she then documents in sequence to produce a sense of motion. Iglesias teases out the 360 degree gesture of drawing and video production, taking a look at the causal relationships between time, subjectivity and wonder. University of Malta Ring Road Races 7th edition of this annual road running event, in aid of Hospice Malta. The University races date back to as early as the 80s when University students would gather on the ring road for a showdown of the fittest. Fast-forward 30 years or so and the races have come a long way. Last year was the biggest event yet and managed to raise €3,150 for Hospice Malta. Francesca Tranter choreographs the Divina Commedia – March 22 Cryptic Street (pictured) will be closing off the Campus Book Festival along with the Fuzzhoneys
