Registration for Poetry on Film Seminar now open National Book Council opens for Terramaxka Prize submissions A collaboration between Inizjamed and the Valletta 2018 Foundation, the Poetry on Film seminar will give applicants a possibility to adapt a Maltese poem into a short film Registation is now open for a seminar organised by the Valletta 2018 Foundation and Inizjamed for the Poetry on Film project. The project sees poems by Maltese poets translated into poetry films which premiere at the Malta Mediterra- nean Literature Festival. The seminar, which will be held at Studio Solip- sis in Rabat on March 24, introduces prospective directors and filmmakers to the poems chosen for this year. It will run from 09:00 until 12:00 and includes an introduction to the Malta Medi- terranean Literature Festival and poetry films by Adrian Grima, followed by a close reading of the poems by Immanuel Mifsud and a discussion. Screenings of local and foreign poetry films will also be taking place, namely the films by Nicky Aqulina/Lyanne Mifsud and Trevor Borg who will also be present for the seminar. Participation is free of charge. To apply for the seminar, please fill out an application form by March 23. Following the seminar, a call for proposals will be published for two poetry films of four to eight minutes in length to be produced and shown at the next edition of the Malta Mediterranean Lit- erature Festival (23th-25th August 2018, Fort St Elmo). A grant of €3,000 is being offered by the Valletta 2018 Foundation and Inizjamed for the making of each film. Applicants are to choose one of the proposed poems. The six poems chosen by Immanuel Mifsud as literary consultant for the Poetry on Film project, are those of Oliver Friggieri and Achille Mizzi. Following the submissions, there will be a process of selection. The deadline for the final proposal will be April 8 and the pitch will follow on April 14. The two selected proposals, one focusing on each poem, will need to be translated into film by the end of July. Participants who have produced films for the Poetry in Film project in the past may also submit proposals. The choice of applicants is left to the discretion of the jury. Any queries should be directed to inizjamed- projects@gmail.com and all the documents re- lated to the project are found on the Valletta 2018 website. Behind the scenes of the poetry film 'Relazzjoni' (dir. Nicky Aqulina/Lyanne Mifsud), screened at last year's edition of the Mediterranean Literature Festival April 13 deadline for applications for the prize which rewards Maltese literature for children and young adults Applications for submissions to the National Book Prize 2018 and Terramaxka Prize are open. As always, the applications are for books published in the year 2017 and are open to all local publica- tions in English or Maltese, given the books fall under one of the accepted categories of the Prize. The Prize awards the authors of those publications that are judged to have high literary and cultural merit. Submissions are to reach the National Book Council by April 13, together with a completed application form and four copies of the submitted book or books. It is important that the applicant indicates the right category for each submission. There are a total of seven categories: Novel, Short Story, Poetry, Drama, Translation, General Research, and Biographi- cal and Historiographic Research. Each category is allowed more than one prize as long as the books submitted exceed the 90% mark. This ensures that low-quality work does not get awarded if it is even slightly better than the rest. In fact, it can happen that no win- ner is chosen for a given category because the required standard was not achieved by any of the entries in that category. An independent board, appointed specifically and solely for the purpose of adjudi- cating the Prize, will evaluate the submissions according to a set of criteria. These, along with the ap- plications and regulations, can be downloaded from the National Book Council website. This year all authors who are awarded the National Book Prize, including the prize for Best Emer- gent Author and the Lifetime Achievement Award, will receive a monetary prize of €2,000, which is double the amount that has been allocated until now. The winner in the category of novels will also re- ceive funding from the Arts Coun- cil for the translation of their work. Applications with four copies of the submitted books must be sent by post or delivered by hand to Jo- seph Debattista at the following ad- dress: National Book Council, c/o Central Public Library, Professor Joseph J. Mangion Street, Floriana FRN 1800. To download the ap- plication, log on to: http://ktieb.org. mt/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/ Applikazzjoni-PNK-2018.pdf
