Maltese schools achieve highest global rankings in international water programme GOZO College Middle School was selected to represent Malta in the international Water Ex- plorer programme, and will now showcase its water conservation efforts during an international celebration event in October in Canary Wharf, London. The top school from each of the 12 participating countries will be present. St Clare College San Ġwann Primary School and Laura Vi- cuna School were the second and third place holders respec- tively. The judging event proved to be a closely-fought one with all schools taking innovative ac- tions in their quest to save water and raise awareness on the dif- ferent uses of water, especially hidden water. It is to be noted that five of the Maltese schools qualifying for the finals have ac- tually been occupying the top five international rankings from amongst the 3,500 participating schools around the world. The eight finalists qualified after taking various water con- servation measures mainly with projects supported by financial grants offered by HSBC Malta Water Programme. In addi- tion to the position holders, the other five finalists were: St Nicholas College Rabat Primary School, St Margaret College Kalkara Primary School, Mater Boni Consilii St Joseph School in Paola, Maria Regina College Dun Manwel Attard Young Adult Education Resource Centre in Wardija and St Igna- tius College Middle School in Ħandaq. HSBC Malta CEO Andrew Beane said it was fantastic to see young people so committed to the conservation of water which was an ever more precious re- source. "We are proud to have supported the success of the Maltese and Gozitan schools who have literally led the world on this initiative and we wish Gozo College Middle School the very best of luck in the glob- al programme finals in London later this year," he said. Water Explorer is a fun, ac- tion-oriented, international online programme that inspires thousands of students to be- come 'water explorers' and lead related actions both in their school communities and local communities. It was launched in Malta in November 2017 and is being coordinated by Nature Trust – FEE Malta through the Eco-Schools programme. Managed by the NGO Global Action Plan, the programme is being followed in France, Ger- many, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Poland, South Africa, Ireland and the UK. Participat- ing schools are encouraged to link up with schools from other countries to share their ideas and top water-saving tips. The online resources are aligned to the United Nation's SDGs (Sus- tainable Development Goals) and are ideal for 8-14 year olds but can freely be used by young- er and older students. More details about Water Ex- plorer are available at http:// www.waterexplorer.org/malta, on Facebook https://www.face- book.com/waterexplorermalta/ or by contacting project coordi- nator Marvic Refalo at marvic@ naturetrustmalta.org The action-oriented programme inspires students to become 'water explorers' CareMalta invests in emergency evacuation equipment AS the leading healthcare provid- er in Malta, CareMalta has always taken the necessary measures to be a step ahead and have all es- sential requirements to operate at its optimum level. For this reason, CareMalta has recently invested the sum of €200,000 for state of the art emergency evacu- ation equipment for all of its fa- cilities to ensure the safety of all residents and staff in the case of a fire. In fact, CareMalta has part- nered with the renowned special- ist in this field, Escape Mobility International BV, where a survey was held in each facility and the requirements were identified and a list of equipment along with an intensive training programme was drawn up to cater for the needs of each facility. Over the past weeks all homes have been equipped with evacua- tion sheets and evacuation chairs to aid in the transportation of bed-ridden and wheelchair- bound residents through emer- gency staircases. The evacuation sheets are CE certified and fire rated as well as TÜV certified up to 250kg while the Evacuation Chair is an "A-label quality" prod- uct which is CE certified, TÜV certified and ISO 9001 certified. The CEO of Escape Mobility International BV, Joep Cuijpers, visited Malta for a week-long training programme to cover all aspects of the run through of an emergency evacuation process by using a 'train the trainer' ap- proach. Trainers were appointed inhouse to become fully qualified representatives to continue the training to each and every em- ployee internally. As part of the service provided by Escape Mo- bility International BV, a compa- ny representative will be visiting CareMalta again to implement a 'maintenance and inspection' programme as well as providing yearly visits to cover the certifica- tion of equipment. Following the training sessions carried out in each home, the fa- cility managers were presented with a certificate confirming that each facility is prepared for the safe and quick evacuation of its residents. The chosen trainers who qualified were also present- ed with a personal certificate.
