16 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 AUGUST 2018 TECHNOLOGY The MITA Data Centre is a state-of-the-art Tier III facility that aims to offer scalability, f lexibility, resilience, security and eco-friendliness to the various ICT solutions across Government MITA believes that Con- fidentiality, Integrity and Availability play a key role in protecting the Maltese Gov- ernment and its citizens in their digital interaction lo- cally, across the EU and on a global scale. In 2017, MITA procured a Secure Connec- tivity solution made up of a range of firewall-based net- working equipment as well as encryption capabilities both for the core network within its Data Centre, as well as for the Wide Area Network ac- cessible to the various Gov- ernment Ministries, Depart- ments and Entities forming part of the Government of Malta ICT network. Apart from technical investments, further organisational de- velopments are also being made within the MITA Data Centre so as to enhance on- going monitoring, detection, and response capabilities and thus to effectively ad- dress evolving threats and challenges resulting from an increasingly globally digital environment. Such develop- ments are also being taken in line with two major leg- islative developments taking place during 2018, that is, the coming into force of the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the transpo- sition into local legislation of the EU Network and Infor- mation Security Directive. MITA's drive towards digi- tal security, however, goes beyond its Data Centre and Government. Since early 2017, it has embarked on a cyber education and aware- ness campaign on a national scale, in fulfilment of one of the key goals of the Nation- al Cyber Security Strategy launched by Government in 2016. The National Cyber Security Strategy, articulated by MITA along with other key stakeholders on behalf of Government, aims to holisti- cally address digital security on a national scale, through governance, legislative, edu- cational, cultural and risk management approaches. Indeed, MITA, whilst fo- cusing on its core capabilities aimed towards Government's effective and secure use of Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the launch of a €40 million investment in the CONvErGE project. MITA will strengthen the public service through the development of the Government IT systems
