Malta's McDonald's player escort accompanies Real's Varane at World Cup final JULIAN Camilleri Konov, the McDonald's Player Es- cort from Malta, was selected to accompany Real Madrid and France defender Raphael Varane onto the pitch for the FIFA World Cup final against Croatia in Moscow last month. Seven-year-old Julian from Birkirkara was chosen through the McDonald's Player Escort Programme in Malta. More than 60 children took part in the McDonald's Foot- ballPlus for Kids programme which included two football festivals for children aged six to 10. One child was chosen at ran- dom to appear at the World Cup final, while the runners up appeared as Player Escorts at the UEFA Nations League fixtures involving Malta. Julian and his mother Svetla- na Camilleri Konova travelled to Moscow courtesy of Mc- Donald's and participated in a variety of activities for Player Escorts, including a boat trip on the river and a visit to the historical Kolomenskoye pal- aces, a former royal estate in southern Moscow. On the day of the final, Ju- lian and other McDonald's Player Escorts were able to meet the players and practise for their big moment. "It was so exciting to be in the final," Julian said. "I will never forget the feeling of walking out onto the pitch with Varane." As an official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup since 1994, McDonald's has a long-held tradition of bringing sport to life for millions of customers around the world. MEMBERS, tutors, collaborators and parents got together last month to cel- ebrate the fifth anniversary of Studio 18 – a creative youth organisation that was originally set up in light of Malta's suc- cessful bid to host European Capital of Culture in 2018. Five years on, many of those connected to the organisation – with was founded by Jean-Marc Cafa` – attended this cel- ebration of five years of stories, learn- ing, and memories. The anniversary took the form of a fairy-tale-themed party, with live music and a performance by Cafa`, as well as by Rachel Fabri, Dean Zammit and Julia Miller. Five of the young members – old and current – also created an animated speech that remembered all of the mem- bers and the most prominent events from the organisation's history. The event was created, planned and man- aged by current Studio 18 members, all of whom look forward to further events of this kind in the years to come.
