Critically acclaimed Maltese musicians under the musical direction of Jacob Portelli are at the helm of the site- specific performance, bringing to life the works of Baroque Masters such as Handel and Bach along with the sound of sacred Maltese music by composer Francesco Azzopardi and more. Sung to perfection by some of Malta's most esteemed sopranos, Dorothy Bezzina and Dorothy Baldacchino, the music is beautifully brought to life on Baroque Harp, Baroque Violin, Baroque Cello and on the Psaltery. This auditory delight is woven harmoniously with tales of the Oratory narrated by the ever-charming and regal character of Fra Bartolomeo performed by Jeremy Grech. Great cormorant DON'T expect to see this bird from your garden – unless, that is, your garden happens to be right by the sea or a lake. A sturdy large water- bird, sleek and muscular, with iridiscent black plumage and piercing green eyes, the cormorant is a stunning sight. These birds love shallow bodies of water, so wetlands like Għadira or Salina nature reserves can be a magnet for this species, although cormorants are a scarce sighting in Malta. Watching this bird glide through the water, arching its snake- like neck before diving for a fish, you thank the Lord you're not that fish. The cormorant's pièce de résistance (for me at least) is its habit of sitting with its broad black wings spread open, presumably to dry them out after a dive. And when one strikes this pose right on top of that stone cross in the middle of the Salina saltpans, it really steals the show. With Salina under BirdLife management, the site is gradually becom- ing safer and more attractive for cormorants and other wildlife. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 16 NOVEMBER 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (photo)
