Scopoli's shearwater CONSIDERING our island status, it's no surprise our breeding birds include a few seabirds too, and one of these is the Scopoli's shearwater. Shearwaters are large gull-like birds that, and like their enormous seafarer cousins the albatrosses, spend most of their long life at sea. But to nest they must of course come ashore, and in Malta they do this in cracks in the vertical cliffs along much of our shore- line. Thousands of Scopoli's shearwaters (M. ċiefa) breed in Malta, but they don't come milling noisily around harbours the way gulls do. Shearwaters are shy birds and only come ashore at night. But they can be noisy too, wonderfully noisy! To experience a shearwa- ter concert, take a summery evening (like today), find a quiet, dark, cliffy place (like Wied iż-Żurrieq, Għar Ħasan, Ta' Ċenċ, etc.), sit, wait for nightfall… and listen. If the air around you starts to fill with eerie baby-like wailing, well, there's your shearwater sonata. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 19 JULY 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (photo) For more information: https://foemalta.org/event/ workshop-ethics-of-creation/ Pre-Sustainability: The Ethics of Creation
