This equipment will enhance and facilitate the ac- ademic programmes and research studies at the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. The equipment consists of a Leica M620 F20 surgical mi- croscope, a Gas Chromatograph and a Polarimeter. Evolve Ltd has already estab- lished a relationship with the Uni- versity of Malta, having provided three other pieces of equipment in 2012 to the value of €70,500 to the Department of Chemistry through RIDT. University of Malta Rector Pro- fessor Juanito Camilleri thanked Evolve Ltd for their generous con- tribution. He said: "We are very appreciative of the donation made by Evolve Ltd. This equipment provides us with the opportunity to further improve on our teach- ing and research work con- ducted in the Department of Physiology and Biochem- istry and in the Department of Chemistry." Evolve Managing Direc- tor Mr Christopher Busuttil said: "As a key player in the scientific and healthcare in- dustries, we are committed to delivering value and as- sist people in their pursuit of excellence. Our donation affirms our commitment to support the University's faculties of science in their research work and teach- ing programmes as well as assist young researchers in their careers." The new Leica M620 F20 surgical microscope, with its high technical specifica- tions, will be of consider- able use in the Department of Physiology and Biochem- istry for both teaching and research purposes. It is an advanced piece of equip- ment and a significant upgrade to the old surgical microscope cur- rently being used in the surgical suite annex to the neuro-imaging facility. Both the Gas Chromatograph and the Polarimeter will be used by the Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science. "It is very encouraging to part- ner with companies like Evolve who believe in our cause. Gifts of equipment such as these enable students to have access to tools currently in use in industry. This is paramount to the University's skills to be on the cutting edge. It is hoped that support from indus- try to the University's Research Trust will grow to be able to nur- ture more talented scientists and researchers," said Wilfred Kenely, RIDT's CEO RIDT was established by the University of Malta to strengthen investment in research and devel- opment on a national level. Fur- ther information on RIDT can be obtained from w w w.ridt.org.mt Renowned organisational develop- ment company Multiplex has just announced a two-day Coaching Skills for Mangers course, aimed at all those who manage a team on a daily basis. The course will fo- cus on creating better work-based relationships through a dynamic coaching approach, and will have a direct impact on engagement, motivation and performance. The course, which will be held on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th December, was created by Multi- plex to draw on its team's diverse skillset. Multiplex is a South Africa-born company with over 18 years' expe- rience in client solutions, and it has recently opened its doors in Malta, too. The company's approach is client-centric and it offers services in leadership development, busi- ness coaching and talent manage- ment, amongst others. Over two jam-packed days with lots of hands-on practice and in- teraction, Multiplex's team of ex- perienced and professional coach- es will focus on concrete learning outcomes. This will include an un- derstanding of the role and impact of coaching within an organisa- tion, the development of personal competencies that underline ef- fective coaching, and the knowl- edge of how to apply a coaching approach that maximises people potential and, ultimately, has a positive impact on the company's bottom line. "This type of coaching approach can be vital in the achievement of a better work environment for man- agers who run teams – however large or small," explains Mr Justin Azzopardi, Partner at Multiplex Coaching. "It provides a practi- cal introduction to the coaching approach, and will give attendees a good grasp of the concepts that can be further developed within a company. It will also showcase how, when staff are happy, they will be intrinsically inspired to go that extra mile and become a reli- able part of a company." Over the years, research con- ducted on the subject has shown that 99 per cent of human re- sources (HR) practitioners believe coaching can deliver benefits to both individuals and organisa- tions, while 93 per cent of them even consider it a key mechanism for transferring learning. "As an organisational develop- ment company, we believe that in- vesting in your people is one of the safest and most profitable ways of ensuring your company continues to grow and prosper. "This course will be a fantastic opportunity for companies to in- vest the remainder of their 2014 training budget in a programme that will have tangible and far- reaching results in 2015," Mr Az- zopardi concludes. While guests mingled in these stylishly hip surroundings, they were also treated to a fantastic show featuring the very clever Molecular Fusion team who put on a spectacular demonstration creating the most original cock- tails which was then enjoyed by all present. Cars International launches Kia's first electric car – The Soul Cars International, representatives of Kia in Malta, launched the first electric car – Soul – manufactured by the Korean brand which contin- ues to break into new grounds and increase its market share in the car industry. A landmark in Kia's history, the zero-emissions Soul EV is Kia's first electric vehicle to be marketed by the company outside Korea. The Soul EV is a uniquely designed battery electric vehicle perfectly suited for city commuters thanks to its class- leading drive range, a spacious cabin and generous cargo area. The Kia Soul EV comes with a bat- tery energy density of 200 Wh/kg. Ensuring that the Soul EV retains all the 'fun-to-drive' character, rapid acceleration to 100 kph (62 mph) is predicted to take 11.2 seconds, while top speed is in the region of 145 kph (90 mph). The battery pack is mounted beneath the cabin, ensuring a low centre of gravity and contributing to the car's accomplished ride, han- dling and refinement. Charging is accom- plished by plugging the Soul EV into any stand- ard household electricity supply. Recharging times are up to five hours for a fully depleted battery using a 6.6 kW AC slow charger. An 80 per cent charge can be achieved in as little as 25 minutes with a 100 kW charger or 33 minutes using a 50 kW DC charger. The new Soul EV has achieved the world automotive industry's first UL Environment Validation for contain- ing 23,942 grams of bio-based plas- tic and 10 per cent bio-based organic carbon content. Soul EV's recyclable interior materials include bio plastic, bio foam, bio fabric and bio PET felt, together with low volatile organic compounds and newly developed antibacterial materials and paint. Kia engineers have developed the outstanding power pack featuring 192 lithium-ion polymer battery cells in eight modules, delivering a total battery capacity of 27 kWh. A lithium-ion battery is a recharge- able battery which saves the electric power as chemical energy and uses it when necessary. The pack incor- porates state-of-the-art thermal control technology to maintain indi- vidual cells at optimum temperature and structural design to enhance crash worthiness. By exploiting the class-leading en- ergy density of its battery, the Soul EV offers a driving range of around 200 km on a single charge. The zero-emissions electric vehicle scored particularly strongly for 'Glo- bal Warming Potential', emitting 39.7 per cent fewer greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, over the whole life of the vehicle. The Soul EV also scored an improvement in 'Photochemical Oxidant Creation Potential', limiting the amount of smog created by the vehicle's manu- facturing process and by the vehicle itself throughout its life. The car will retail at €29,900, showroom price, which includes the full government grant. As with eve- ry other Kia model, the Soul EV will guarantee owners with the peace of mind provided by Kia's unique seven- year warranty, including on the EV battery. There are no additional leas- ing costs besides the selling price. The Kia Soul EV is available for a test drive at Cars International, Mdina Road, Qormi.
