Events 46 maltatoday, Sunday, 24 May 2015 The Dulux Let's Colour Project took to the corridors of MCAST for a second successful edition of the programme. First year interior design students following a Higher National Diplo- ma put their skills to the test with an Interior Design Project organ- ised by Vee Gee Bee. Students set out to design three MCAST corridors, with the scope of creating a more vibrant environ- ment using colour. A judging panel consisting of representatives from MCAST as well as Vee Gee Bee se- lected the winning design. The Let's Colour Programme aims to make a positive differ- ence to people's lives with col- our. Through this event, not only did students get the chance to see their work showcased for all to enjoy but they also got the opportunity to learn about the importance of colour and the psychology behind it. Vee Gee Bee's colour consultant, Trudy Xuereb, also spoke about other Let's Colour Projects organised by Dulux internationally. The chosen concept was de- signed by Marie Rapa, Jo Marie Mayo, Sophia Kuzmenko and Stephanie Lehniger, under the guidance of teachers Shawn Mus- cat and Vanessa Pace O'Shea. Speaking on their design, "We were inspired by the natural light reflected uniquely in each corridor. Therefore, we selected colours and design schemes that emphasised these reflections." Students de- scribed the project as an enjoyable and insightful experience and look forward to future events organised by Vee Gee Bee in collaboration with Dulux. Mark Ellul Daikin ALIVE2015 Challenge members learn about current research in cancer The Dulux Let's Colour Project takes to the corridors of MCAST – Institute of Art and Design Banif Bank's staff extend their solidarity to Hospice Malta The talk was primarily based on cancers which commonly affect young people and children. It pro- vided ALIVE members with an insight into the current cancer research in Malta and where their raised funds will go. Senior Lecturer Dr Pierre Schembri Wismayer gave an over- view of the progress and advance- ment being carried by the Anato- my Department of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Uni- versity of Malta in collaboration with Mater Dei Hospital. "We have had very interesting positive results on leukaemia and bone cancers (osteosarcoma) both of which are cancers which occur in children. A particular point of interest is that it seems that some of the chemicals and extracts which have worked on blood can- cer also work on bone cancers. We have reason to believe that some of these may also work on brain cancers," said Dr Schembri Wis- mayer. Some cancers (usually those deep on the inside of the body, like brain and blood) come about by a chance mutation, and can therefore hap- pen both in old or young people. Other types of cancer, such as lung, intestine, skin, are caused by exposure to elements which dam- age DNA in UV light, smoke or our food, and therefore usually happen only in older people who have been exposed to lots of damage over a long time. The funds being raised through the Daikin ALIVE2015 Challenge for Cancer, in collaboration with Puttinu Cares, will be facilitated by the University's Research Trust (RIDT). The money will be used to support a PhD student to study the effects of the best candidate treat- ments from our previous work on brain tumours and neuroblastoma (a tummy cancer found in chil- dren). The treatments will aim to make the cancer cells grow old and die without many of the side effects of chemotherapy. The team of researchers also con- sists of the Department's Head Dr Jean Calleja Agius, a junior post- doctoral scientist, students read- ing for PhD or Masters degree and a number of undergraduates who help in research over the summer months. "The ALIVE Charity Foundation is the first Maltese organisation to contribute substantial funds to- wards cancer research in Malta – a fact which we are very proud of," said Nicky Camilleri, Chairper- son ALIVE Charity Foundation. "Thanks to the hard work and sacrifices of our members and the public's great generosity, Maltese researchers are being able to fol- low important studies which may not be followed internationally." The talk was then followed by a debate on a different subject but was important for the cyclists to learn about road safety whilst cy- cling and the dynamics of cycling in groups. Daikin ALIVE 2015 Cycling Challenge for Cancer will be held from the 9th to 18th July 2015 and will take the 45 cyclists on an en- during marathon starting from Liechtenstein, across the Alps, to Switzerland, Germany, France, Luxembourg and cycle into Bel- gium. Crossing the English Chan- nel to Dover, the cyclists will then finish the challenge at the Puttinu Cares Residence in Sutton, UK. This year's edition of ALIVE2015 Cycling Challenge for Cancer is sponsored by Daikin and is pow- ered by Wurth Malta, Made Good, Valletta Cruise Port and Garmin Malta. Other community spon- sors include Owner's Best, Impres- sions Print Possibilities, Danusan, Ricetti.com, PAVI Shopping Com- plex, Springbox Media, Go & Fun, KPMG, Cuschieri Group, Carmelo Caruana Co Ltd, Mothercare, Ex- press Group, MSV Life, UVIA, Autobahn, Falzon Group and At- las Insurance. The Malta Hospice Movement is a voluntary not-for-profit organisa- tion that provides specialised care for over 1,000 patients and their families. Their multi-professional team aims to address the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs faced by patients with serious illnesses. The donation by Banif's employees is an acknowledgement of the great work done by Hospice. Kenneth Delia, General Manager at Hospice Malta, said, "The goal of Hospice Malta is to continue to make a difference in the lives of pa- tients and their families. It is thanks to similar acts of solidarity that we have been able to continue with our mission of providing free-of-charge palliative and end-of-life care servic- es on the Maltese Islands for the past 26 years. On behalf of our patients and their families, we would like to show our appreciation to the staff of Banif Bank for the donation." "The Bank is very active in its sup- port of the community and these values are clearly shared and in- ternalised by our employees," said Simon Grech, Head of Corporate Services Department at Banif Bank. "Through this donation and other initiatives, like our monthly Casual Friday collections, our staff are able to contribute to worthy causes in a very tangible way. "This, in addition to the Bank's numerous CSR commitments, helps ensure that our Organisation's cul- ture is one that promotes solidarity and humanism, which in turn helps foster a sense of community within our own team. We are very pleased to be able to lend our support to Hospice Malta and want to take this opportunity to thank them for the excellent work that they do." The funds being raised by Daikin ALIVE2015 Challenge for Cancer will be facilitated by RIDT for research in the treatment of cancer in children.
