Events 47 maltatoday, Sunday, 24 May 2015 Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It is the main cause of death in women aged 40 to 59 and about 1 in 10 women will develop breast cancer. Risk factors such as age, first live birth, family history and meno- pause account for nearly 50% of the risk with environmental factors also playing an important part. These are scary statistics. This is why research in this field plays a crucial role. The Breast Cancer Research Group within the University of Malta was setup around five years ago as coopera- tion between various Departments at University and Mater Dei Hos- pital, all with the aim to study and solve breast cancer issues in Malta. To discuss this subject, Malta Café Scientifique and the Research Trust of the University of Malta (RIDT) are organising the event, 'Surviving & Thriving: Breast can- cer research in Malta' , on Monday 25 May, at 7.30pm, at The Palace, Valletta. The talk is being held un- der the auspices of the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. Prof. Christian Scerri, Dr. God- frey Grech and Shawn Baldacchi- no will be talking about the latest breast cancer research to the pub- lic. The Breast Cancer Research Group recently identified a marker in cells that controls the growth of blood cells. This marker is impor- tant in blood cancer disorder and the group is now looking to see its role in breast cancer. This research is being supported by two NGOs, namely: Action For Breast Cancer Foundation (www. actionforbreastcancer.com); the Alive Charity Foundation (alive- charity.com/2015/); and the EU- funded Imagenx project (http:// imagenx.eu/). Questions to the speakers are welcomed throughout this event. The Breast Cancer Research Group is made up of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, the Department of Pathology and the Department of Surgery of the Uni- versity of Malta, with the Depart- ment of Pathology and Surgery of Mater Dei Hospital. For seat reservation please con- tact cafesci@mcs.org.mt. Entrance is free. Her Excellency Marie Louise Co- leiro Preca, President of Malta, has paid an official visit to GO plc. Her Excellency was welcomed at GO Head Office in Marsa by Chief Financial Officer, Edmond Brincat, and given a tour of vari- ous departments during which she had the opportunity to meet staff members. Brincat said, "It is indeed a privi- lege for GO to welcome Her Excel- lency today. Our Company has, for a number of years, been a very strong supporter of The Malta Community Chest Fund. In addition to strong financial support to L-Istrina, GO also pro- vides all the communications in- frastructure to make this annual event happen. We also support numerous other events organised by the Fund throughout the year. Her Excellency has always shown immense gratitude for this sup- port and we are honoured to see that reinforced once again today." During her visit to GO, Her Ex- cellency was also briefed on sig- nificant investments which GO is currently undertaking including GO fibre and 4G and the positive impact these will have on Malta's communications infrastructure. Coleiro Preca said, "GO plays a crucial role in our society, pro- viding essential communications services which help us all to live our lives, and run our businesses, in a more fulfilling way. As a major player in Malta's economy GO has also always taken its social respon- sibilities seriously and I would like to take this opportunity to once again personally thank GO and all the staff for the support they give to The Malta Community Chest Fund." HSBC Bank's commitment to gen- der diversity has earned it a spot in the global 'The Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2015'. The UK newspaper recognised HSBC for prioritising gender di- versity in its business strategy, ac- cording to the annual list jointly published with Opportunity Now, a gender equality campaign from Business in the Community. This recognition extends to HSBC Malta, where a number of initiatives to advance women have been set in place, including Banking on Women as well as the recently-launched Arrow pro- gramme. Diversity experts assessed em- ployers on their ability to demon- strate best practice in a number of areas including, organisational target setting, holding leaders and managers to account, changing culture through initiatives such as unconscious bias training, and in- tegrating workforce metrics into planning processes and strategy. Entries were open to any employer around the world with UK pres- ence. As part of the entry process, HS- BC showed how it promotes gen- der equality – both internally and externally – as part of its commit- ment to diversity and inclusion. HSBC Malta head of Human Resources Mandy Garner said: "While we are making progress on gender equality in the work- place, we still have work to do, particularly in the representa- tion of women at senior levels of HSBC. "Our Arrow programme is one of the things we are doing to help more female junior managers ad- vance to senior roles." HSBC regularly raises aware- ness globally by encouraging col- leagues to 'connect with differ- ence' around gender diversity. Most recently, events were held across the organisation for Inter- national Women's Day in March, while an HSBC NOW TV special edition looked at gender diversity from male, female and transgen- der perspectives to show why it is an important issue for all employ- ees and a priority for the Bank.
