Before kick-off, the Floriana starting 11 unfurled a banner in memory of a young Greens fan, Steve Attard, who passed away a few days ago. The Greens took the lead on the 19th minute when Nicolas Chiesa squared up to Italian striker Matteo Picciolo whose powerful shot from just outside the box beat goalkeeper Glenn Zammit. In a thrilling and balanced encounter, the Blues under the stewardship of Italian coach Al- fonso Greco scored an equalizer just seven minutes later when Serbian midfielder Marko Pote- zica blasted the ball past Calleja Cremona with a powerful rising shot. Following the goal, Sliema dominated their eternal rivals for the rest of the half, with Jean Paul Farrugia going closest to putting the Blues ahead missing a sitter just before the break. As the game resumed, Sliema thought they had taken the lead but Potezica's effort was disal- lowed after Denni's left-wing corner was adjudged to have crossed the line before the Ser- bian headed the ball in. Potezica converted a ball from Jean Paul Farrugia with a shot between Matthew Calleja Cre- mona's legs. Following a rather quiet start to the second half, the Greens sprang to life on the one hour mark when Argentinian striker Nicolas Chiesa hit the bar in a spectacular shot from some dis- tance. On the 68th minute, Farrugia once again went close to putting his name on the scoresheet but the Floriana goalkeeper did well to save from a close distance. In the last ten minutes of the game, both sides threw every- thing at each other and Flori- ana looked as though they had pulled off a third-consecutive derby victory, when Clifford Gatt Baldacchino brought Mario Fontanella down inside the area. Referee Fyodor Zammit had no choice but to point towards the spot and from 11 metres the same Fontanella made no mis- take to put his side ahead. But Sliema, in particular Pote- zica, refused to give up and with three minutes remaining the Serbian converted a through ball from the lively Farrugia slotting the ball through Matthew Calle- ja Cremona's legs.
