maltatoday, SUNDAY, 15 MAY 2016 51 Sport RUGBY CYCLING A 7's Tournament to remember IN its efforts to expand local rug- by in our sister island of Gozo, the Malta Rugby Football Union hosts an annual 7-a-side tourna- ment in Gozo with he help of the Gozo Bulls Rugby Club. This year's edition was held at the Gozo FA Stadium with the participation of all local clubs, Falcons, Gladiators, Gozo Bulls, Kavallieri, Sliema Stompers and Swieqi Overseas for the Men, and Falcons, Kavallieri and Swieqi Overseas for the Ladies. 7-a-side rugby is a variation of Rugby Union which sees the fast- er and more agile players make use of the full pitch, pulling off a more f lowing game whilst still seeing the contact that rugby is famous for, but at an accelerated pace. It is because of this pace that the games are shortened to 14 minutes, which may not sound like much but you will get a chance to see it played at the next Olympic Games. This tournament took place in the form of a league style tour- nament, with all teams playing off against each other through- out the day. The level of rugby showed the development of cer- tain players over the last season, which led to some very exciting moments of rugby. This years edition was won by the Swieqi Overseas in the Men's category, having won all their games, followed closely by Fal- cons in second, who only lost one game. The Women's competition was won by Falcons, with Kaval- lieri as runner up. The competition would not have been possible without the help of the Gozo Football Asso- ciation, and the dedicated work of our team of officials who strive to make the local game as exciting as possible.
