maltatoday, SUNDAY, 31 JULY 2016 XII Gaming What has established our global reputation in the gaming industry? reputation reputation MALTA GAMING AUTHORITY Building SCM02-03, Level 4, SmartCity Malta, Ricasoli SCM 1001, Malta T +356 2546 9000 E info.mga@mga.org.mt www.mga.org.mt At the Malta Gaming Authority, our regulatory philosophy, organisational principles and culture are focused on player protection. Malta's transparent legal framework and experience in regulating gaming has developed into a world class eco-system providing effective, innovative and efficient regulation. Our regulatory framework provides assurances both locally and internationally that fairness and transparency are at the core of everything that we do. To this effect, our licensees are associated with the highest levels of integrity and efficiency. Proudly recognised as a world class authority in terms of innovation, governance and diligence. Continues from page X The EU does not have sector-specific legislation for gambling services, despite the cross-border nature of online gambling. Do you think there should be common legislation for EU countries to further facilitate the issue of passporting licenses and multi- jurisdictional testing? Gaming is not subject to the EU prin- ciple of mutual recognition, whereby if a product can be lawfully sold in one EU member state, it can automatically be sold in all others. Therefore, a license in the UK does not automatically allow operators to serve Portuguese citizens, for example. Attitudes to gaming vary considerably between places and for now it seems most EU countries prefer to retain control of this sector. Whilst there is not a single Europe-wide technical standard for either the land based sector or iGaming, there has been some convergence of standards across many regulated jurisdictions worldwide. This has meant that at an operational level, it is possible for NMi to offer Transfers of Approval across many EU jurisdictions. In essence, this means NMi can test a particular game for several jurisdictions at the same time, ensuring that we are able to offer savings to operators by iden- tifying where requirements are repeated. NMi would then be able to provide a set of test reports for each required jurisdic- tion, delivering significant savings as well as facilitating the launch of content across many jurisdictions at the same time. Any concluding comments? My observation on the industry is that we are now seeing compliance taken very seriously, and that the modern Com- pliance Manager holds a very important place in the organisations we deal with. Five years ago doing sales for NMi, I used to phone online gaming companies and ask to speak to the Compliance Manager and no-one in the organisation knew who it was. Often it was a part time role and not considered important. Now we find ourselves dealing with C level career Compliance Managers with teams of lawyers and other compliance professionals working for them. These compliance professionals have little appetite for risk, at either a company or personal career level. The modern test lab holds an important place in the gaming industry that goes well beyond testing and extends into every facet of an iGaming business. A lab is a multi-function, multi-skilled, multi- national partner who, in our case at least, I hope our customers don't see as just an overhead, but great added value to their business. For NMi the question we are being asked has moved away from "what do I have to do?" and more often now is "how can you help me reduce risk?". We look forward to continuing to estab- lish partnerships with many of the biggest players in gaming worldwide, while maintaining the highest standards in all the markets we serve.
