JAMES DEBONO IN an unprecedented move the Attorney General has appealed against a permit issued to former university rec- tor Prof. Juanito Camill- eri for a 600 square metre extension to the basement of a winery in Siggiewi. The first hearing of the appeal will take place on 1 September. T h i s will be the first ever appeal presented by a public au- thority against a decision taken by the Planning Authority, thanks to the power granted to the at- torney general in the new planning law approved last year. The new planning law al- lows government and pub- lic authorities like the En- vironment and Resources Authority to appeal PA de- cisions in front of the En- vironment and Planning Review Tribunal. ERA is currently under pressure by environmen- talists to appeal two deci- sions to approve high-rise towers in Sliema and Mriehel. After hinting that it would not be appealing the decisions, the public authority has announced that it will be taking a decision tomor- row on whether to appeal. If ERA appeals it will be the attorney general who will have to present its case against the two high- rise towers. This is because the law states that the "Attorney General on behalf of the Government and any de- partment, agency, author- ity or other body corpo- rate wholly owned by the Government", shall always be deemed for all intents and purposes of law to be "an interested third party" with the power of appeal- ing planning decisions. Marius (Mario) Muscat, 57, is president of the Transport Services for Disabled Persons Coopera- tive Ltd (TDP Services), which currently provides school transport services. He was charged in court on Friday with slightly injuring a motorist after stopping his BMW X6 in the middle of the Birkirkara Bypass and assaulted the driver with what appeared to be a tool. Informed sources have told MaltaToday that TDP Services had their contract renewed in 2011 to cover transport routes for the scholastic years 2011/12 to 2017/18. The agreement was signed in 2011 between the Directorate of Education Services and TDP Ser- vices. The estimated cost for the duration of the con- tract is €3.5 million: TDP Services is paid circa €450,000 per scholastic year to transport primary and secondary students to school and back, plus any increases in the cost of living adjustment. The transport services cover the scholastic year but no services are provided during weekends, public holidays, and summer, Christmas and East- er holidays. THE MaltaToday survey on the holi- day intentions of the Maltese shows that only 38% of respondents will be taking a holiday of three days or more away from home during the summer months. THE survey also shows that Italy remains the favourite destina- tion of the Maltese, followed by cruises and the UK.
