maltatoday, SUNDAY, 12 MARCH 2017 Events 45 For the love of vintage and classic cars M&S Malta 'Committed to Recycle' a decade on This year we see the introduction of a new Concourse D'Elegance right here in Malta. For aficiona- dos of vintage and classic cars, the Concourse D'Elegance is a special and unique event that highlights the spectacular and their love of these cars. It derives its name from the majestic baroque city which itself is an icon of beauty & elegance, Valletta, the city built by the Knights of the Order of St John. The Valletta Concours d'Elegance will make its debut on 23 April 2017 in Merchants Street, and it is envisaged that this will become a yearly staple event in the Maltese Islands. The concours, born out of a collective love of vintage and classic cars and their preservation and enjoyment, seeks to fill in a gap in Malta's var- ious classic car events by giving local enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase their pride and joy in an upmarket event that celebrates their passion within the majestic setting of Valletta, itself a 16th century baroque icon. The organisers seek to obtain the participation of a number of local and possibly foreign entrants in a bid to present an event that will blend automotive craftsmanship and design across a number of decades with the passion of classic car ownership, at the same time capturing the celebratory cama- raderie that these events generate. For this year's Concours vehicles in authentic condition manufac- tured up to 1980 are being accept- ed to enter the Valletta Concourse D'Elegance, but entries manufac- tured between 1981 and 1986 can participate in the "Modern Clas- sics" category. A team of independent foreign judges with vast experience in similar events abroad has already been commissioned to lend pro- fessional expertise to the judging process. The Concours will exhibit vari- ous categories of vehicles and the onus will be on the judges to decide on the best entrant in each cat- egory, based on a predetermined set of criteria which includes a primary focus on originality and authenticity as well as attention to design, styling, elegance and state of preservation, amongst others. The winner of each category will then vie for the prestigious over- all winners' trophy. The overall winner of the Valletta Concours d'Elegance will be the entry ad- judged to be The Best in Show. The organisers have set the fol- lowing Categories for the Judging Panel: Pre War, Post War, El- egance, Sports Car, Preservation/ Original, Restored, Light Com- mercials, Popular Classic, Modern Classic and Period Costume. The judging panel for this year's Valletta Concours D'Elegance in- clude the who's who in the world of Councours D'Elegance. These include: Robert Coucher, Jer- emy Jackson Sytner, Gar Axon, Paul Godfrey, Nic Waller, George Hamill, Hans Emeron all from the UK; Massimo Delbo and Toni Cobucci from Italy; Katie Waller from the USA and Maria Waller from Sweden. These renowned judges include past and present editors of Octane magazine, Bentley magazine, con- tributors to The Daily Telegraph motoring section and various Porsche magazines and editor of Classic Cars magazine. One of the judges is also respon- sible for the creation of the annual London to Monte Carlo luxury motoring adventure – the Grand Tour – which has been running for over 32 years, as well as creat- ing and founding the Concours of Elegance, the UK's first inter- nationally renowned concours d'elegance and a first spectacle event at Windsor Castle. Although the number of entries so far has been surprisingly high, all classic car clubs are invited to encourage their members to par- ticipate, so as not to miss being part of this unique event, which is guaranteed to garner internation- al coverage. Application forms can be downloaded from www. vallettaconcoursedelegance.com or through www.facebook.com/ vltconcourse. Members of the general public may also participate in the "Best Costume" category. Those inter- ested are invited to contact the organisers, or by on-site registra- tion on the day of the event. Any- one who is interested in learning more about the event can visit the event's website www.vallettacon- coursedelegance.com Marks & Spencer, the high-quality retailer of clothing, home, beauty and food products with outlets in Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's and Hamrun, is marking the 10th An- niversary since it participated in GreenPak's "Committed to Recycle" initiative. The 'Committed to Recycle' mark is given to companies that are cor- porately committed towards a bet- ter environment and to their cus- tomers. "The commitments M&S Malta makes ensure that we make a posi- tive difference, whether it's sourc- ing responsibly, conserving energy, reducing waste or supporting the communities we serve. According to Plan A launched in 2007, which is Marks & Spencer's business plan for today's and tomorrow's sustain- able retail challenges, we believe we can make a difference by leading the way on truly sustainable change. The plan is focused on customer, employee and supplier engagement and includes commitments that tackle issues such as climate change, waste, raw materials, health and be- ing a fair partner," said Erika Sam- mut, Brand Manager at Marks & Spencer. "Using the GreenPak 'Commit- ted to Recycle' seal for the past 10 years is a testimony of our efforts to reduce our environmental impact even here in Malta, and serves as a tangible sign of respect towards the environment and the Maltese com- munity," she said. To mark this anniversary, the company is offering a selection of Marks & Spencer products for the 'Irriċikla u Irbaħ ma' GreenPak' campaign. During March and April 2017, these products will be present- ed to randomly selected individuals from various localities who actively recycle packaging waste. Launched in 2013 in the locali- ties served by GreenPak Coopera- tive Society, 'Irriċikla u Irbaħ ma' GreenPak' scheme has rewarded over 4,000 households with prod- ucts supplied by member companies of the GreenPak Coop Society. GreenPak's CEO Ing Mario Schembri said: "Marks & Spencer was one of the first companies in Malta that truly understood corpo- rate environmental consciousness, and joined GreenPak's recyling scheme 10 years ago. Today, more than 1,000 companies and entre- preneurs rely on GreenPak's recy- cling services. GreenPak's mark is a strong testimony that goes to prove to these companies' customers that the business is following its obliga- tions and positively contributing to a healthier environment by commit- ting to recycle packaging waste." Apart from the environmental point of view, in today's increasingly competitive market, displaying the seal makes good business sense. GreenPak encourages businesses to apply for this seal, to prove to their customers and the community that their business is following its obliga- tion to care for the environment and that it is committed to recycle.
