Delia, a lawyer by profession and an outsider to the PN struc- tures, is the first to throw in his hat in the race to succeed Simon Busuttil, who announced he would be stepping down as lead- er after the party's second land- slide loss in the 3 June elections. He had been making waves with various PN councillors and touching base on his interest in standing for the post of leader of the PN. Though he denied last week that he was interested in the post, Delia told MaltaToday yes- terday that he had only come to a firm decision in the previous 24 hours. "Although I did not do anything to solicit any support or interest, I realised that many people were approaching me and encourag- ing me to run for the leadership," he said. "You slowly start to un- derstand what this entails, what it could end up meaning, and although I already felt a sense of want- ing to do s o m e - thing, this decision could not be taken lightly." Delia said that he had the full support of his wife, lawyer Nickie Vella de Fremeaux, who not only gave her consent out of a sense of a duty but because she be- lieved – like him – that he had a lot to contribute. Letters rogatory – or letters of re- quest – are a formal request from a court to a foreign court, requesting judicial assistance. MaltaToday is informed that two men whom the Italian authorities want to reach out to are a former Gaming Authority official and a trust lawyer. Antimafia prosecutor Nicola Grat- teri, of the Catanzaro Tribunal, said in comments to the media that the inves- tigation was still awaiting the results of the international rogatory from Malta, "but there has been no reply". Gratteri, who is leading an investi- gation into the antimafia operation dubbed "Jonny", said he was baffled that Malta, so close to Italy, had failed to reply. Contacted by MaltaToday, Attor- ney General Peter Grech rejected allegations that Malta was refus- ing to answer. "I cannot comment on the merits or the specifics of the case but it is not correct to state that Malta is refusing to answer. The police are handling the matter," the Attorney General said. The investigation is in con- nection with an alleged mafia- related business that moved its gaming franchise to Malta. 8 See full coverage of the offi cial opening of Parliament on pages 4-5 7 7 Tony Zarb speaks of his love for the country €1.75 14 15 Bkara FC president to contest PN leadership
