maltatoday SUNDAY 22 APRIL 2018 43 This Week The New Victorians launch music video 'trilogy' Pop music sibling duo release a trio of narrative music videos in conjunction with new EP THE New Victorians - sister duo Bettina and Philippa – have just released their first single titled Comeback from their upcoming concept EP – Silence. Amal- gamating cinematic storytelling and indie electronic music, the three-song EP will take the form of a short film, split into three music videos. The Music Video Trilogy was shot in the UK earlier this year and charts the transition from intimate silence, to uncomfort- able silence in relationships, exploring the notion that sometimes, silence can be the loudest sound. The Silence EP was written by The New Victorians, produced by The New Victorians together with How- ard Keith, and mixed and mastered at Jagged House. The Music Video Trilogy was also directed by The New Victorians, together with Malcolm Debono as Director of Photography, and stars actors Andrew Sowrey, Beatrice Owens, Lydia Davidson, Péter Hor- váth and Andris Horváth. Having releasing Part Two and Part Three of theSi- lence Music Video Trilogy on April 19, they will be releasing the third part on April 26. An intimate pre- miere and Launch Concert will be held on May 6 at the Malta Society of Arts, where the three original sin- gles will be played live for the first time followed by a screening of the short film. New publication sheds light on the musical underground MALTA'S musical landscape is rapidly changing and a homegrown digital publication called Under- ground Sound is serving as a cata- lyst. Underground Sound's first event was launched on March 29, show- casing local and expat talent in an open freestyle rap competition held in Jah Ruulz reggae bar of St Julian's. The response was overwhelming with the organisers finding them- selves with too many qualified rap- pers on stage looking to win the same prize – a bottle of Hennessy and a promo video. That night, London-born freesty- ler Fattima Mahdi took home the prize by crowd decision, signifying a new direction for Malta's music scene. Fattima Mahdi Open call for a curatorial team for the Malta Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2019 Application deadline is at noon on May 16 ARTS Council Malta welcomes proposals for the Malta Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. Arts Council Malta, under the auspices of the Ministry of Jus- tice, Culture and Local Govern- ment in Malta, has been entrust- ed to act as the Commissioner and the Contracting Authority, of the Malta Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (May 11– November 24, 2019). Arts Coun- cil Malta is the national agency for development and investment in the cultural and creative sec- tors. Following the success of the Malta Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia 2017, Arts Council Mal- ta is issuing an open call for a cu- ratorial team to submit a project proposal for the Malta Pavilion. The call is open to curatorial teams with a strong international curatorial track record; multi-national curatorial teams that include Maltese individuals in the team as well as Maltese art- ists will be favourably considered. The Malta Pavilion is approxi- mately 285 square metres with exposed brick walls. It is located at the Artiglierie in the Arsenale Area, which is the same location which hosted the Malta Pavilion during the 57th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2017. In 2015, during the 56th International Art Exhibition, this location hosted the Tuvalu Pavil- ion. This is a very central location in the Arsenale which sees hun- dreds of visitors every day. In 2017, the Malta Pavilion garnered a host of high profile media accolades and acknowl- edgements, including coverage in prestigious titles such as The Observer, which listed it as one of the five best pavilions and The Culture Trip which also listed it as one of "The 10 National Pavil- ions You Can't Miss at the Venice Biennale". The winning project will be se- lected by an independent jury of art professionals appointed by Arts Council Malta.
