46 Events maltatoday SUNDAY 29 APRIL 2018 HUSQVARNA Mo- torcycles are pleased to introduce their 2019 Mini Motorcross Range of bikes. The three new models are a complete line-up of 2-stroke motor- cycles that combine premium technology with top-end compo- nentry, to offer young riders one of the most advanced mini motor- cross ranges currently available. Perfectly embody- ing Husqvarna's pio- neering spirit, the TC 50, TC 65, and TC 85 models continue to set the benchmark in terms of handling, power, and weight in their respective classes. The TC 50 has the same strik- ing looks and ergonomic feel as Husqvarna's full-sized motorcross machines, while offering superior quality components and the most powerful engine in its category. Its engine makes use of a 3-shaft de- sign and is fitted with an automatic centrifugal clutch that reduces riding complexity for younger rid- ers. Furthermore, the exhaust is specifically designed to match the characteristics of the 2-stroke pow- erplant. Leading components such as the WP suspension, the WP AER 35 fork, the 205mm of wheel travel, and air unit in the left fork, allow the rider to push the limit with con- fidence. The TC 65 provides young mo- torcross fans with the opportunity to experience a full race bike with a hydraulic clutch and a manual gearbox, as premium components are fitted as standard. Its pressure- controlled exhaust valve helps riders obtain top level performance, while features such as the cast aluminium swingarm and the intel- ligent cooling circuit, create a motorcycle that is both modern and highly competitive. Finally, the TC 85 fur- ther raises the bar in the competitive 85cc class. It combines the latest in chassis technology with a state-of-the-art WP suspension, and a 2-stroke engine which guarantees optimum reliability. Moreover, the cylinder is designed around an innovative power valve system which signifi- cantly enhances power, torque, and controllability. The 6-speed gearbox and For- mula hydraulic diaphragm spring clutch allow for the power to be correctly delivered across the RPM range. Even better, up front, the WP AER 43 has a split fork design with air in its left leg and oil in the right leg, offering dampening character- istics, while in the rear, the TC 85 is fitted with a special version of the WP XPlore PDS shock absorber. The occasion celebrat- ed the launch of the Brewery's first beer, Farsons Pale Ale in April 1928. In his speech marking Ham- run's significance in this milestone, Farsons Chairman Louis A Farrugia outlined the historical highlights that, over a span of more than a cen- tury, connected the Farrugia family and later the Company with this lo- cality. The Farrugia family had initially established a four-floor flour mill and pasta making factory, called The Victoria Steam Roller Flour Mill. The street where the factory was located was called Strada Pastificio; and sub- sequently changed to Farsons Street. When this mill was destroyed dur- ing the Sette Giugnio riots in 1919, the factory was changed into a car- bon dioxide producing facility called L. Farrugia and Sons Ltd. L. Farrugia and Sons Ltd was soon supplying various clients, among which H. G. Simonds Brewers. Si- monds imported beer in bulk from the UK and had it bottled and car- bonated locally. Both British armed forces and the Maltese were good consumers of beer, and importation of the product was constantly on the increase. Through this contact with the brewing industry, the Farrugia brothers – on the advice of Luigi's son, Lewis V Farrugia, who was then 25 years old, decided to venture into this thriving sector. They made a crucial decision – they would brew beer themselves in Malta rather than importing it. Their first brewery in Hamrun was a first for Malta, as well as a brave and innovative step in the country's economic and industrial history. Refering to the label on their first beer, Farrugia highlighted a number of elements that were to anticipate the pioneering spirit of the company. The Farrugias coined the name 'Far- sons', incorporating the first syllable of their surname and the latter part of the company's name, 'sons'. It was the first time this brand name was used. Over time, it became the name of the company itself. The Farsons Pale Ale label also featured Neptune as an emblem for the first time. Referred to by many as 'l-Iġgant' ('the Giant'), this iconic fig- ure was reproduced from a watercol- our by the renowned artist Edward Caruana Dingli (1876 – 1950). "When one considers that these product assurances were given nine- ty years ago, well before the current awareness about the importance of natural ingredients and the avoid- ance of chemicals, one can only ad- mire the brewery's foresight," said Farrugia. As Hamrun developed and grew, so too did Farsons. Its Pale Ale was an immediate success on the market, which led to Farsons and Simonds joining forces only a year later. Si- monds Farsons extended its prod- uct line, with Blue Label also being launched in 1929. Just down the road, in Strada San Giuseppe (now High Street) also in Hamrun, an- other brewery known as 'The Malta Export Brewery' was gearing up to produce lager type beers. Their first lager, popularly called 'Cisk' after the nickname of the Scicluna family which owned it, was advertised for the first time in August 1929 in time for the feast of St Cajetan. Simonds Farsons and Cisk were eventually to merge in 1948, forming Simonds Farsons Cisk Ltd. The links between Farsons and Hamrun continue on several lev- els. In 1951, Farsons made prem- ises available to the Parish of St Ca- jetan to be used for the teaching of doctrine. Later, this place became a chapel, and is still referred to by some as the Farsons Chapel. Louis A Farrugia concluded by re- marking that, whilst both Farsons and Ħamrun went through various challenges and a profound change, strong links continue to bind them. To mark Farsons' 90th anniversary, an important milestone for both, Farrugia announced that Farsons was making a donation towards the fund for a new statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception to be placed in Parish Priest Muscat Square in Hamrun, now being re- furbished, as the parish celebrates its own 50th anniversary. Present for this event were Mem- bers of Parliament, Local Council- lors, the Parish Priests of both Ham- run parishes, representatives of the locality's organisations, as well as senior management from Farsons Group.
