Waders are a large family of birds, most of which live along the waterline, hence their collective name. For these birds, life is literally a beach but it is no easy life. Shores are very exposed habitats that afford very little shelter from weather and from predators. To escape attention waders are often cryptic in colour, and the dunlin (M. pispisella tad-dabra) is no exception. Small and with few colours to speak of (even drabber in winter) they skulk around on sandy or muddy shores looking for food. Dunlins have a typical wader bill: long, thin and ta- pering, very useful for probing the wet mud for worms and other invertebrates. Dunlins breed way up north and we see them only on migration to and from Africa. A scatter of them often turns up in places like Għadira and Salina, to spend a few days in the relative safety of these sites, both of which are bird sanctuaries. Dunlins are also protected per se, so they're off limits to hunters wherever they turn up. It's all about the legumes this month. I already spotted the first chickpea shells lying on the street corner, testament to the old men catching up on village gossip while munching away on fresh, raw ċiċri. How- ever, as good as those may taste, nothing beats the quintessen- tial Maltese bean: ful, or broad beans. Everyone knows how good they are in the traditional kusksu soup, in the famous pies or in bigilla (technically made with a slightly different bean; ful ta' ġirba). Therefore, I wanted to share a rather different recipe: a broad bean & goat's cheese dip. This recipe was introduced to me by my mother, and there- fore very fittingly, just in time for Mother's day this weekend, why not make this delicious dip for Sunday lunch? FoE Malta published the AgroKatina report about the local fruit & vegetable supply chain, and the pocket guide highlighting when local fruits & veggies are in season. Ejja esprimi l-ideat tiegħek! www.culture.gov.mt culturalpolicy2020@gov.mt C M Y CM MY CY CMY K IN the coming weeks, the Cul- ture Directorate within the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government will give start to ten stakeholders meetings. The aim of each meeting is to discuss, analyse and evaluate how we would like culture to develop in the first half of the coming dec- ade. Malta's first national cul- tural policy was launched in 2011. Since then, rapidly- evolving global and local fac- tors have transformed our cultural landscape. Some of the goals that were set in 2011 have been achieved more suc- cessfully than others, while new challenges have emerged. This consultation process shall open the first conversa- tion about a new cultural pol- icy for the period 2020-2025. Each meeting shall tackle a different theme, kicking off with cultural communities. Others themes will include cultural heritage, innovation in cultural and creative prac- tices, and globalisation. The set of meetings will reach all incorporate different aspects which need to be taken into consideration for a new and improved culture policy. They will come to a close with a ses- sion dedicated to the young generation. Everyone is invited to take an active part in these sessions because the cultural policy be- longs to everyone and every- one benefits from culture be- cause it brings happiness and well-being. Culture brings out the positivity in all of us. All sessions in Malta will take place at Fortress Build- ers, Valletta while those in Gozo will take place at the Main Hall, Ministry for Go- zo, Victoria. Weekday ses- sions start at 6.00pm. Those falling on a Saturday start at 9.30am. Towards a new cultural policy
