12 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 JUNE 2018 This day last year, Malta went to the polls and elected the Labour Party with a historic landslide. From day one, we recognised the pressing concerns related to a lack of social accommodation and the rising prices dominating the rental market. We rolled up our sleeves and started working in the best interest of those affected. As the politician responsible for social accommodation, I cannot underline enough how the past y year has shown how committed we all are in delivering what we promised in our electoral manifesto. One year on, I reiterate the commitment stronger than ever before. Along with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and the Maltese Government, I reaffirm that it is our priority to see everyone progressing forward and assist those who, for a number of reasons, lag behind. This commitment applies as well to the rental market. During the past year, we have carried out intensive research to understand better how this market operates while also familiarise ourse ourselves with the realities of hundreds of people who are finding it difficult to cope in the current circumstances. What we have now is simply the law of the jungle and this is unacceptable to both landlords and tenants. We, on the other hand, want to provide peace of mind, stability, and justice as we are fully aware that a strong rental market yields benefits to landlords and tenants alike. We will leave no stone unturned before we offer realistic and effective solutions to the current challenges. We care. RODERICK GALDES Parliamentary Secretary for Social Accomodation
