KURT SANSONE THOUSANDS marched in Valletta yesterday in remembrance of slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia demanding that "truth and justice" prevail. People walked down Republic Street chanting "justice, justice", as they car- ried placards critical of the authorities and demanding that the mastermind of the murder be brought to justice. The march capped a number of activ- ities held throughout the day to mark the first year since Caruana Galizia's brutal murder. One of the placards read 'You killed a journalist to avoid prison', while an- other mocked the country's rule of law by equating the police and other law enforcement agencies to Joseph Mus- cat and the courts of law to a Labour Party club. 'A democratic dictator – Lord Egrant', the placard read. The large crowd burst into applause when activists strung up a banner de- picting Caruana Galizia's face on the Maltese flag, on the hoarding around the Great Siege monument. The banner was in defiance of repeat- ed actions by the authorities to remove candles, flowers and messages placed at the foot of the monument, which has served as a makeshift memorial for Caruana Galizia since her murder. A similar strong applause was re- served for former PN leader Simon Busuttil when speakers sprung to his defence and described him as an an- ti-corruption cam- paigner. Malta was one of several countries whose own taxation system, combined with a le- nient regime on the length of stay for buy- ers of golden passports, placed it in a group of countries with "potentially high-risk" citizenship-by-investment schemes. Malta sells citizenship to the global rich for €650,000 through the Individual In- vestor Programme, which comes with a mandatory property and investment com- ponent that raises its total cost to just over €1 million. "Potentially high-risk CBI/RBI schemes are those that give access to a low personal tax rate on income from foreign financial assets and do not require an individual to spend a significant amount of time in the jurisdiction offering the scheme," said the Organisation for Economic and Social Development, a rich countries' club which has produced respected stand- ards on taxation, bribery, and consumer protection.
