We want the full truth – European Commission With one year having gone by, the Eu- ropean Commission emphasised the im- portance of bringing those responsible to justice, and of the full truth emerging. Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioners Vera Jourova and Mariya Gabriel said in a joint statement that they were honouring the "hard work and relentlessness of Daphne, of Jan Kuciak and of many other journal- ists who sacrifice everything they have". "We need to send a clear signal to all journalists: it is safe to work in Europe. If journalists are silenced, so is democracy. This will not happen in Europe. Not on our watch," they said. Press NGOs denounce lack of public inquiry The International and Euro- pean Federations of Journal- ists (IFJ-EFJ) deplored the lack of an independent public in- quiry into the murder, and the "unwillingness" of the Maltese government to take "concrete action to end impunity around the crime". The IFJ-EFJ went on to de- nounce the lack of a will to identify the masterminds be- hind Caruana Galizia's assas- sination. IFJ general secretary Anthony Bellanger said the Federation also condemned the fact that the murder investigation was "still at a stalemate", since it is still not known who was behind it. Reporters Without Borders (RWB), following a meeting with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat the day before the an- niversary, said they were disap- pointed by his "lack of commit- ment to establish an immediate public inquiry into whether the assassination could have been prevented." "The longer this question con- tinues to remain unanswered, the longer journalists will re- main at risk in Malta," RWB said, urging Muscat to start an inquiry without delay. At a silent vigil which was held yesterday in Bidnija at 2.59pm, people placed flowers, candles and messages in the field where Daphne's car came to a stop following the deadly explosion one year ago
