14 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 27 FEBRUARY 2019 CULĊTURE HISTORY Celebrating 70 years of the Malta Cultural Institute THE Malta Cultural Institute is this year celebrating 70 years of uninter- rupted activity in the fields of art and culture, keeping up its motto "We Sup- port the Arts". The 70th anniversary celebration concert which was held on 17 Febru- ary was a huge success and organis- ers, performers and all the audience rounded the evening off with a beauti- ful reception. The MCI will be presenting its 6th concert of the season on Sunday 10 March in the auditorium of G. F. Ab- ela Junior College, Msida, at 7pm. This will be the 70th Anniversary Youth Celebration Concert. The evening will be hosting the Malta University Junior College Orchestra and soloists under the direction of Maestro Manoel Pirotta. The soloists will be Alto Sax – Alexander Cordina, Violin – Kurt Falzon, Piano – Gerard Coleiro, Clarinets – André Spiteri, Gianluca Xuereb, Rudy Sammut, Bag- pipes – Craig Saliba, Isaac Bartolo Burlò, Singers – Chanelle Cardona, Shaian Debono, Thomas Causon and Dancer – Caitlin Cassar. Free Parking will be available for guests in the grounds of the Junior College during the concert. The Jun- ior College Theatre has lift facilities from the parking area or from inside the college, providing easy access for guests with special needs. All are invited to attend the concert. More information about the concert may be obtained by phoning the MCI Director on 21338923 or 99800409, or by sending an email to maltacultinst@ gmail.com Heritage Malta sites affected by severe weather conditions DUE to the weekend's severe weather condi- tions, the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeo- logical Park in Qrendi, Fort St Elmo in Val- letta, and Fort St Angelo in Birgu were not open to the general public, mainly for health and safety reasons. The Malta Maritime Mu- seum was temporarily closed in the after- noon owing to electricity outage. Although the prehistoric temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, including the protective shelters, were unharmed, the Visitor Cen- tre suffered some external damage. Mem- bers from Heritage Malta's maintenance and upkeep department were on site on Sunday to evaluate all damages. Extremely strong winds which hit directly at Fort St Elmo did not lead to any particu- lar loss, however the site was temporarily closed as a safety precaution, in the light that Fort St Elmo is a highly exposed lo- cation given the northeasterly wind direc- tion. The Egmont Hall in Fort St Angelo suf- fered considerable damage, particularly to its roof. External information panels were also affected. Other reported damages included the collapse of part of the boundary wall of the prehistoric site of Tas-Silġ in Marsaxlokk, some structural damage in one of the pa- vilions at St Paul's Catacombs, and the up- rooting of trees in some of Heritage Malta's sites.
