maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 27 FEBRUARY 2019 7 NEWS a past general election candidate of right wing party Azzjoni Nazzjonali who had also contested the 2009 MEP election with Libertas. Only 2 of Labour's 14 candidates are sitting MEPs in contrast to 3 PN incum- bents who have now been joined by a sitting MP (David Stellini). But the PL team also includes 2 former MPs namely Alfred Sant who had not contested the 2013 general election before contest- ing as an MEP and Joseph Sammut who did not contest the 2017 election. Both parties are fielding one local councillor each, namely Nadur councillor Josianne Camilleri and Sliema councillor Michael Briguglio. Both major parties are fielding two candidates who not incumbents but have experience working at an EU lev- el. On the PN side these include David Stellini who served as Press Advisor for the EPP group between 2007 and 2017 and Peter Agius who is part of the EU parliament president Antonio Tajani's cabinet. The PL is fielding Cyrus Enger- er the PM's personal envoy to the Euro- pean Union and Robert Micallef who was employed as an economist with the European Commission and also served as adviser to the Socialist Group. AD's Mina Tolu also has experience in Euro- pean civil society having served on the executive board of the International LGBTQI Youth and Student Organisa- tion, before becoming the communica- tions officer of the Transgender Europe network. As regards numbers the PL is fielding the highest number since 2004 while the PN is fielding the same number of candidates as in 2009. But judging from the level of campaigning while all PN candidates seem to be putting the same amount of effort especially through their on-line visibility, some Labour candidates still lack a strong on-line presence. among PN economists and among Labour 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 45.4 42 35.7 20 35.7 50 21.4 10 14.3 14.3 20 20 14.3 20 10 42.9 40 14.3 40 13.3 14.3 40 14.3 10 7.1 10 7.1 10 20 14.3 14 10 PL % PN % Average Age Women Legal Profession Economists Sociologists Financial Services Management/Business admin Journalists/TV hosts Born in Gozo Born in South of Malta Born in North Harbour Declared LGBTIQ Incumbent MEPs/MPs Former MPs Incumbent councillors Ex third party candidates Non-incumbents w/experience at EU level Number of Candidates Statistics (in%) about the candidates being fielded by the Labour Party (PL) and the Nationalist Party (PN)
