Friday JAMES DEBONO AN illegally developed 'zoo' in the tar-Remel area, a rural area in Zebbug along Triq il-Buskett, may still be ap- proved despite a recommendation for refusal by a Planning Authority case officer. The small zoo includes an aviary cage, a donkey stable, an alpaca stable, two puma cages and a dog kennel. During Tuesday's meeting, the PA's planning commission indicated that it may overturn the negative recom- mendation if the zookeeper's room is reduced in size and if an illegally con- creted area is not included in plans. The commission noted that the ap- plicant's son was a registered danger- ous animal keeper, but the application still requires the clearance of the PA's agriculture advisory committee which advises on applications set on agri- cultural land. A final decision is to be taken next month. The makeshift zoo includes a large aviary cage covering an area of 125 sq.m, which also includes a 21 sq.m pond. One of the puma cages covers an area of 98 sq.m and includes a small room. Another large cage for the keep- ing of puma has an area of 72 sq.m. The PA's rural policy guidelines identifies the keeping of animals in- tended for research, educational, sport, leisure and exhibition pur- poses, as one of the acceptable rural activities outside the development zone, subject to a number of criteria including a requirement that struc- tures are build in lightweight visually permeable material. But the case of- ficer noted that while the cages and aviaries are constructed in galvanized steel pipes and steel netting, other structures including the keeper's room are constructed in local stone. Illegal alpaca and puma zoo in Attard may yet be approved
