The Karnival ta' Malta is one of the oldest historical festivals in Malta, with just under five centuries of cred- ited and documented history dating back to the Knight's of St John's occupancy in Malta. New artistic creations are born while traditions are kept alive and revived, particular- ly with the revival of satire, a fundamental facet to the his- torical Maltese Karnival. Theatre MARCH 15 – 18 Macbeth Teatru Manoel presents an exciting new production of one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. Shake- speare's masterpiece tragedy about ambition comes back to Malta in this wonderful production. Victorious from battle, heroic Macbeth allows three witches to feed his in- ner darkness and ambition so that he commits regicide and becomes king. Egged on by his wife, Macbeth com- mits this atrocious act while the king is resting inside his castle. To keep power, Mac- beth becomes blood thirsty, leaving a trail of blood any- where he goes. The opposi- tion finally unites with the English forces and Macbeth is defeated. More information and tickets: https://www.te- atrumanoel.com.mt/defau lt. asp?m=shows&id=795 Music MARCH 9-10 "WOJT YLA – God's Clarion Call" In early March, the Don Bosco Oratory of Gozo will be producing this brand new musical in maltese called "WOJTYLA – God's Clari- on Call", written by gozitan composer Antoine Mercieca based on lyrics by gozitan poet Joe W. Psaila. This musi- cal is being staged by the Don Bosco Oratory of Gozo with the collaboration of Fondazz- joni Santa Ċeċilja."WOJTYLA – God's Clarion Call" is being produced to commemorate the 40th anniversary since Karol Wojtyla became Pope. At the same time the musical would be also launching spe- cial celebrations on the 70th anniversary since the official opening of the Don Bosco Oratory in Victoria. MARCH 4-10 Così Fan Tutte Teatru Manoel is staging a brand new production of Mo- zart's opera Così Fan Tutte on 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th March 2019. With Così fan tutte, os- sia La scuola degli amanti, the theatre concludes the brilliant opera trilogy of Le Nozze Di Figaro (produced in 2017) and Don Giovanni ( produced in 2018) result- ing from the collaboration between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. The first of them, Le Nozze di Figaro (was pre- miered in Vienna on 1 May 1786 while Don Giovanni's was in Prague on 29 Octo- ber 1787. Così fan tutte was to follow with a premiere in Vienna on 26 January 1790. This production is supported by Bank of Valletta. There are discounted tickets for those attending the opera. Booking is from www.teatrumanoel. com.mt, telephone 2124 6389. APRIL 12 Gianni Morandi Concert Gianni Morandi will be singing live at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Tà Qali on April 12. The show will feature more than 40 tracks from Morandi's repertoire forming a playlist that would retrace the funda- mental stages of his 60-year career. They include Occhi di ragazza, Scende la pioggia, La fisarmonica, Non son degno di te, Uno su mille, Dobbiamo fare luce, and Una vita che ti sogno. These last two tracks are part of Morandi's 40th album D'Amore e D'Autore, in which Morandi interprets songs of love.The show starts at 9.30pm. JULY 10 Pink Floyd's Nick Mason live in Concert Rock 'N Malta are proud to present Pink Floyd's founding member Nick Mason and his band Saucerful of Secrets live in concert on the 10th of July at St.George's Square, Val- letta. Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets featuring Nick Ma- son, Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Lee Harris and Dom Beken is a unique opportunity to experience Pink Floyd's cel- ebrated and significant early body of work played live in- cluding songs from albums 'The Piper At The Gates of Dawn' and 'A Saucerful Of Secrets'. Tickets are available from www.kultura.mt EXHIBITIONS UNTIL FEBRUARY 28 The Immortals of a City The Immortals of a City showcases 51 selected pho- tos from the vast quantity of works, these photos are not objective records of the sculptures, but rather stun- ning reinventions inspired by lots of reading and ref lec- tion on historical documents. The exhibition seeks to con- vey the inf luence and charm of European public artworks, by representing sculptures of European cities through photography, offering visi- tors an extraordinary taste of glimpses captured in these European cities, and inviting one to ref lect on life and mo- ments of history while pro- gressing toward the future. It has been exhibited in Beijing, Qingdao, Tianjin and other places in China, meeting with profound appreciation and interest in the historical, cul- tural and exotic diversity of the urban carvings, especially by many who have never been to Europe. FEBRUARY 1 – MARCH 23 Rosella Biscotti Exhibition Blitz is pleased to announce the opening of a solo show by internationally acclaimed artist Rossella Biscotti (Molfetta, 1978; live in Brus- sels and Berlin). The exhibi- tion portrays the artist's prac- tice with a selection of her key artworks along with a work in progress, her most ambitious to date, originally presented at Van Abbemuseum in Ein- dhoven (2016) and intended to be produced in Malta over the coming year. The show will be accompanied by a free illustrated publication with an essay by the curator, visu- als from the exhibition and more insights about the art- works. A public talk between the curator and the artist will take place on 2 February 2019 at 5:30 pm, followed by drinks at the Blitz Bar. FESTIVALS MARCH 8 – APRIL 7 Gualitana Festival of Music "Gozo's main classical music festival" returns between 8 March and 7 April 2019. This year's edition promises to be an exciting programme of events focusing on the theme "Women in Society". Gauli- tana will include an eclectic mix of events with multifari- ous styles – orchestral, cham- ber, recitals, vocal, featuring international and local artists and ensembles. Held in vari- ous locations around Gozo (with some events in Malta), the festival incorporates multiple creative arts, from literature, to acting, cinema and live-painting, whilst pre- senting multiple genres (jazz, pop, musicals and folk music). It will also host an exhibition by 30 Chinese female artists and shall commemorate the bi-centenary since the birth of Clara Schumann. Lectures MARCH 14 Fortress Malta: An Island Under Siege (1940-1942) Celebrated UK author and broadcaster James Holland will tell the island's incredible story of wartime defiance, to help Save Valletta's Skyline. In his lecture entitled Fortress Malta: An Island Under Siege (1940-1942), popular author, historian and BBC broadcaster James Holland will share the human drama experienced as Malta became the most bombed place in the world and the islanders were liter- ally starving. The lecture will be held on Thursday 14 March in the Ballroom at the Phoe- nicia Hotel in Valletta. The talk will be followed by a short meet-and-greet with guests, and an optional VIP dinner.
