14 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 MAY 2019 NORMAN Lowell has been a permanent fixture in all Euro- pean elections held in Malta since 2004, each time increas- ing his vote tally. In the last election held five years ago, the far-right poli- tician polled 6,761 votes or 2.7%. He had 657 votes less than Alternattiva Demokra- tika. And polls are now suggest- ing that on 25 May, Lowell may even end up ahead of the Greens and the Democratic Party. In the latest MaltaToday survey, Lowell polled 1.2%, a result better than that for the Democratic Party (0.8%) and Alternattiva Demokratika (1%). It is the first time that Lowell and his Imperium Europa par- ty have featured in the polls held so far. Lowell announced his Eu- ropean election candidature very late in the day for the April MaltaToday survey to be able to capture any result in his regard. But one month later, Low- ell has not only featured but forged ahead of the two minor parties. Despite having two MPs, PD has failed to leave any appreci- able impact on the electorate. Its best result was in March last year when the MaltaTo- day survey recorded PD at 2.1%. In all other surveys bar one, the PD has failed to reach the 1% mark. AD's fortunes are no dif- ferent. Its highest result goes back to November 2017 when the party polled 3.1% in a Mal- taToday survey. After that, the party's results hovered below 1% with only a few exceptions. Lowell's primary support is in the Northern region, which includes the locality of St Paul's Bay, where his anti- immigrant rhetoric may find some fertile ground. In this region, Lowell regis- ters 4.7% support, followed by NEWS MALTATODAY SURVEY Between Adrian Delia and Joseph Muscat who do you trust most? Muscat emulates PL's rise as Delia fails to capitalise on PN's growth JOSEPH Muscat's trust rat- ing in May has climbed back above the 50% mark, reflect- ing the Labour Party's higher poll numbers. The Prime Minister scores 51.7% in the May MaltaTo- day survey as he reverses the downward movement regis- tered last month. But while Muscat's rise is also reflected in the PL's for- tunes, not the same can be said of Delia, who has re- mained static despite the PN's upward movement. The Opposition leader's trust rating stands at 21.2%, a slight drop from 21.6% in April. Delia is hampered by the lack of trust shown in him by his own voters. Only 52% of those who voted for the PN in 2017 say they trust Delia. This contrasts with Muscat's high approval rating among those who voted PL in 2017. The Prime Minister receives the trust of 93.1% of PL voters. But more significant is the fact that Muscat also enjoys the trust of 6.8% of PN voters, something that Delia does not benefit from in reverse. Muscat trumps Delia among women and men, across all age groups and all regions. Among those aged 18-35, Delia flounders despite the PN managing to get ahead of the PL as a party. The same holds true for the Northern region, where Delia does not emulate his party's success to get ahead of the PL. These results can probably explain why the PN is try- ing to lead a campaign that is pushing the candidates rather than the leader. On the flipside, the PL is try- ing to capitalise on Muscat's high trust rating by present- ing the European election as a choice between the Prime Minister and Delia.
