maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 24 JULY 2019 20 WEIGHTLIFTING SPORTS MALTA'S leading weightlift- ing athletes, Tenishia Thorn- ton and senior athlete Shaun Ciantar, were invited to com- pete in the Italian Regional Championships in Lanuvio last weekend. Thornton had the best com- petition of her three-year weightlifting career where she managed to finish with person- al best lifts across the board. She started the competition on a 'no lift' with her 50kg opener snatch but quick turned her performance around by successfully lifting 50kg and 52kg on her remaining at- tempts. She then went on to lift 60kg, 62kg, and 64kg in the clean and jerk. Thornton is only 13 years old and lifts in the Under45kg category; all her top lifts were national records and personal bests. Last weekend, she finished in second place overall in the youth category when matched up against Italy's top young- sters. Thornton will now be prepar- ing for the upcoming European Youth Championships set to take place in Israel at the end of the year. Senior athlete Shaun Ciantar did not have his best perfor- mance compared to his recent results in national meets. The weightlifter, who has only been in the sport a little over a year, said it was his in- consistencies in his technique that kept him from performing at his best at these champion- ships and will work harder to continue to improve on his best results. He ended the meet with a 97kg snatch and 124kg clean and jerk. The two were accompanied by national team coach Jes- mond Caruana who thanked Massimo Grassi, President of FIPE Lazio for the invitation, along with SportMalta, MOC and MWA for their constant support during these interna- tional competitions. This weekend, the MWA will be organising the Malta club competition. Next week the Maltese na- tional team will be joined by internationally renowned coach, Tamas Feher, for a lo- cal training camp that will last three weeks. Thornton, 13, finishes second in youth competition at Italy event Tenishia Thornton finished second overall Shaun Ciantar acknowledged inconsistencies in his technique kept him from performing at his best
