ISSUE OF TENDERS KARL AZZOPARDI LAST week, Maltese football teams Valletta FC and Gzira United FC ousted foreign op- position in their Champions League and Europa qualifying matches respectively, to secure a spot in the competitions' sec- ond round. Valletta's 1-1 draw at home against Dudelange, meant they now face Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the sec- ond stage of the Champions League qualifying rounds. In their game against Croa- tian football giants Hajduk Split, Gzira United's Hamed Kone sent a curling drive that flew into the top corner, send- ing the maroons to the next round. They now face Latvian side FK Ventspils. The Maltese champions be- gin their second-round duties tonight as they face off against their Hungarian counterparts away from home. The second-round will be played in Malta on the 30th July. The odds on Valletta win- ning their first leg looks bleak, as betting company William Hill's current odds on the champions taking home a win stand at 16/1, Bet365's odds stand at 14/1, Skybet's odds stand at 14/1 and Unibet at 17/1. Bet365 have the odds set at 7/1 on Valletta qualifying to the next stage of the competi- tion. Gzira United's chances of winning their away game on Thursday look brighter, as both Bet365 and Unibet have the odds set at 15/4 on the ma- roons clinching a win against their Latvian opposition. Bet365 have set the odds at 11/10 on Gzira qualifying to the next round. FK Ventspils have won six league titles and seven Latvian cups. They made history in 2009, when they were the first Lat- vian team to participate in the group stages of a UEFA com- petition, securing a place in the Europa League. Valletta's opposition, Fer- encváros, are Hungary's most successful football team, hav- ing won the country's do- mestic league 30 times, while clinching the cup competition 23 times. Valletta F.C. will face Di- namo Zagreb or Saburtalo if they progress to the next round, while Gzira United face Jeunesse Esch or Vito- ria SC if Ventspils are elimi- nated. Maltese teams look to repeat last week's success, but bookmakers think otherwise Gzira United's Hamed Kone celebrating his goal
