maltatoday, SUNDAY, 14 DECEMBER 2014 39 THIS WEEK PANDORA'S Box and Euro Media Forum are celebrating 75 years of Batman on December 19 at 17:30 at St James Cavalier, Cinema, Valletta. Born out of the rich and dark atmos- phere of pulp fiction, Bob Kane and Bill Finger's Batman swung onto the comic book pages in 1939 and has since enthralled generations of comic fans, while confronting a barrage of villains, mentoring a se- ries of sidekicks, and saving Goth- am City time and time again. Hosted by The Joker and Harley Quinn, two of Batman's most cele- brated villains, they will unlock lit- tle known nuggets about the Caped Crusader's origins, exploits and how the Dark Knight's legacy has become immortalised in TV and film. This will be followed by a Bat- man quiz where members of the audience will have the opportunity to win prizes. After the talk, there will be a screening of Legends of the Knight – a doc- umentary film that tells the true stories of individuals who are inspired to become real-life heroes because of their child- hood love of Batman. A Bat- man memora- bilia exhibition will also feature as part of the event. The Bat- man event is being done in collabo- ration with Pandora's Box, Graphic Novels Library Malta, Sci-Fi Con 2015 (Malta Comic Expo) and Gi- otto restaurant. For bookings call on 2122 3200 or visit www.sjcav.org .This event will be at an entrance fee of €5 with €3 concessions for students THE Manoel Theatre has combined the festive season, one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Malta and one of Europe's leading ensem- bles to present a Baroque Christmas Concert on December 20 in the Our Lady of Graces Sanctuary (Zabbar Parish Church). Added to this is a unique programme of French sacred music of the 17th century which focusses on music by Charpentier written for Christmas. This will be performed by Ensemble Correspon- dances, conducted by the renowned French conductor and musicologist Sébastien Daucé. Ensemble Correspondances's latest album 'Meslanges pour la Chapelle d'un Prince' has recently won the Grand Prix 2014 de la mu- sique classique which is one of the most prestigious awards in the mu- sic industry. The Parish Church of Zabbar is dedicated to Our Lady of Divine Grace and dates back many centu- ries. Zabbar became a parish in 1615 and the present church was designed by Tommaso Dingli and finished in 1696. In 1738 Giovanni Bonavia de- signed a new façade for the church and paintings by the Maltese artist Alessio Erardi were added in 1715. It is one of the most magnificent examples of baroque ecclesiastical architecture on the Island. The full programme includes tra- ditional Christmas songs of the era as well as pieces by Bouzignac, Boes- set, Charpentier and Moulinié. En- semble Correspondances is formed from alumni of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, one of the leading music academies in the World, and Malta is one of their stops on a tour which includes some of the major concert venues in Europe. Manoel CEO, Ray Attard said, "This event is part of Teatru Ma- noel's plan to reach out by present- ing music in notable settings in dif- ferent localities all over the Island. The intention is to offer the oppor- tunity to everyone who loves music to experience it in our architectur- ally and artistically rich venues." The concert on December 20 starts at 20:00. Tickets are €20 with discounts offered for students and kartanzjan holders and can be pur- chased online: www.teatrumanoel. com.mt, bookings@teatrumanoel. com.mt or 2124 6389 Celebrating 75 years of Batman Unique Baroque Christmas Concert in Zabbar A giant megaphone will remain perched at the Teatru Rjal over the next four weeks, with passers-by hav- ing the opportunity to shout out any- thing they like until 21:00 each day. The installation, titled rePUBB- LIKA and launched earlier today, was designed by artist Pierre Portelli as the final piece out of four – all of which fell under the umbrella of the plethora of national festivities held this year, and organised by Fon- dazzjoni Celebrazzjonijiet Nazzjon- ali (FCN). As in the three previous works – 'Seasharp' in Birgu, 'Gateway' and '#settembru64' in Valletta – rePUBB- LIKA celebrates the role of the citizen as the main protagonist in the demo- cratic process of the Nation State. This is reflected in the use of sound and voice as the projection of demo- cratic process and participation. Portelli said that while the previ- ous installations all had sound as a prominent feature, rePUBBLIKA in particular "expresses this more liter- ally" since it "gives voice to the peo- ple" by allowing them to say whatever they want to say through the giant megaphone. The installation is rendered in a raw steel finish mirroring "both strength and the notion of a work-in- progress". "This is a metaphor for a Republic founded on sound democratic prin- ciples that like a work in progress, may need fine tuning and polishing in order to achieve and maintain its aspirations," Portelli said. Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici observed that the piece, just like Aus- tin Camilleri's contentious 'Zieme' is strategically positioned to direct its 'gaze' at Parliament. "Both pieces send a message to the political class. The way I interpret what they are trying to say is: we need politicians to hear our voices." rePUBBLIKA will remain on dis- play for four weeks. The installation is supported FCN and Pjazza Teatru Rjal 'Sounding off' on the Republic Pierre Portelli's rePUBBLIKA will remain on display over the next four weeks at the Teatru Rjal Ensemble Correspondances
