Events 48 maltatoday, Sunday, 14 december 2014 Events Malta sends delegation to the Cambridge University International Model United Nations The Malta Model United Nations Society sent a delegation of six stu- dents to participate in the twentieth edition of the prestigious Cambridge University International Model United Nations for the first time. Model United Nations is an aca- demic simulation of the United Na- tions that aims to educate partici- pants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. The MaltMUN Society is an in- dependent, internationally-minded organization committed to securing close ties among the most diverse of its members, investing in their per- sonal development and nurturing leadership skills, whilst embrac- ing the spirit of the United Nations throughout. The Maltese delegation represent- ed Brazil with Cristina Cefai, Head Delegate, in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Naomi Bugre in the Disarmament and International Security Pro- gramme (DISEC), Francesca Hili in the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee (SO- CHUM), Ruth Bonnici in United Nations High Commissioner for Agencies (UNHCR), Luisa Cas- sar Pullicino in the Special Politi- cal and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) and Robert Napier in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organiza- tion (UNESCO). During the Closing Ceremony awards were given to delegates that epitomised the spirit of CUIMUN. Award winners succeed in commu- nicating their objectives, cooperat- ing with other delegates, seeking a consensus, and representing the policy of their country accurately, yet not in detriment of the commit- tee. This year, Robert Napier and Luisa Cassar Pullicino won Com- mended Delegate Award. Two other delegates won the most coveted Award of Distinguished Delegate, these being Cristina Cefai and Nao- mi Bugre. The Malta Model United Nations Society also won the Com- mended Delegation award, a first for the Society. The MaltMUN Society is highly satisfied with the results achieved at this year's edition of CUIMUN which demonstrate the Society's dedication to maintain a high level of debate, leadership skills, and pos- tive portrayal of the Maltese people internationally. The pot stills mark a milestone for the Teeling family, bringing whiskey production back to their ancestral roots in Dublin 8. The new distillery will be a modern re- vival of the Teeling distillery that thrived in the area in the 18th cen- tury. Crafted in Sienna in Italy by Fril- li Impianti, who have been making distilling equipment since 1912, the traditional copper pot stills travelled 2,275 kilometres to their new home in The Liberties, where they were assembled on-site. The 15,000 litre wash still, 10,000 litre intermediate still and 9,000 litre spirit still will be at the heart of the distillery and are essential for creating the distinctive f lavour of Teeling Whiskey. The Teeling Whiskey distillery is the first new distillery in Dublin in over 125 years and will have the capacity to produce 500,000 litres of whiskey on an annual basis. The Teeling Whiskey brand is already on sale in Ireland and is currently in over 30 export markets. The construction of the new dis- tillery will guarantee future supply for the Teeling Whiskey brands and allow the creation of a range of innovative and authentic Irish whiskeys based on the traditional and unique Dublin style of distil- lation. Teetling whisky can be purchased from CAPT.A.Caruana outlets, Old bakery street, Valletta and St. Augustine street, St.Julians. The team's recent test held a few weeks ago was deemed a success, as adjustments were made ready for the prestigious race, which be- gins on January 4th 2015. With a new KTM 450 RALLY factory ma- chine launched just ahead of this year's event, in which Marc Coma and Jordi Viladoms went on to take the top two positions, the team has twelve months more experience with its race bike and only minor refinements have been made in preparation for the most important race of the year for the rally squad. Coma has had a superb season, as he took victory in the Cross-Coun- try Rallies World Championship with consistently strong perform- ances to add to his extensive ac- colade, which includes four Dakar wins. The Spanish-ace is once again meticulously preparing eve- rything for the 2015 edition of the race with one intention, to continue KTM's 13 consecutive Dakar wins for another year. He is joined again by fellow countryman Viladoms, who had nearly no preparation on the KTM machine last year and has been able to build on his runner-up success while having a real prepa- ration for the 2015 rally with the entire KTM team. Unfortunately for Ruben Faria, who was ruled out of last year's event in the early stages, his prepa- rations have been more difficult, as a shoulder injury has thwarted his progress in recent weeks. The Por- tuguese rider expects to be at full fitness ahead of the Dakar race. Fi- nally, the team apprentice and Brit- ish star Sam Sunderland has had a strong preparation for this year's rally with good results during the year, despite some injury niggles, and he will be looking to extend his results as he learns from his col- leagues after taking a stage win in the 2014 Dakar. Additional KTM factory support- ed riders There are also other notable con- tenders aboard KTM machinery with Polish rider Jakub Przygonski (Orlen Team) continuing to work with the factory team, and Dakar- beginners Austrian Matthias Walkner (Betsafe KTM Rally Fac- tory Racing Team), and Australian Toby Price (KTM Rally Factory Racing Team) looking to embark on their first South American rally journey. The focus of the morning's discussion was to ensure that one can live with dignity and peace of mind when they get older. The conference brought together a number of leading experts in the subject of pensions, and was described as an "eye-opener" by women (and men) who attended the seminar. MSV Life CEO, David G Curmi, highlighted the importance of tak- ing on financial responsibility. "People need to take stock of the situation earlier on in life, before it is too late to do something about it. The state has an obligation toward those who have contributed to soci- ety by working, and it is important that the existing state benefits are maintained. However, one needs to think for themselves if they want to bridge the gap between what they will get from the state, and what they will actually need to maintain a certain standard of living." "It is about time we replace the terms First Pillar, Second Pillar and Third Pillar, and start talking about savings, because that is what it's all about after all! This is a generation of borrowers rather than savers; and with the ratio of pensioners to em- ployed persons on the rise, and peo- ple living for longer, we need to start saving as early as possible unless we want to outlive our savings." Curmi made a number of sug- gestions for encouraging savings throughout his address, including that of setting up employee savings schemes with automatic enrolment, where a small part of an employee's salary is automatically deducted and saved unless the employee opts out. "This has proved to be a very suc- cessful strategy in other countries, substantially increasing the rate of savings throughout. The solution is low-cost and easy to implement and, although current Fringe Ben- efit Regulations may be somewhat prohibitive to employers, there is nothing to stop them from offering a voluntary scheme." All in all, the core message of the morning was a very meaningful yet simple one: you need to take on financial responsibility by saving something now to secure a better future for yourself and your loved ones.
