This was by far the Rangers' best performance with a strong attacking play looking dan- gerous at every occasion. Despite the three points, Zebbug remain bottom in the table but move four points be- hind Tarxien. For the Rainbows this was the eighth consecutive negative result. It was the Rainbows who took the lead in the 12th minute when Carlos Hevia Mendez skipped past a de- fender and with a neat finish placing the ball at the back of the net. Zeb- bug responded a few moments later when with an attempt by Britto who shot high after receiving a cross from Bojan Mamic. Then it was again Britto who was continuously threat- ening the Tarxien defence, who shot high with a similar attempt at goal. Three minutes from the end of the first half Cleber Barbosa Viana saw his effort easily saved by the opposi- tion's goalkeeper. Six minutes into the second half, Zebbug equalised from a well taken corner kick by Muchardi, and a great header by Mamic who gave the keep- er no chance. Zebbug again continued to pressu- rise their opponents and two minutes after grabbing the equaliser, they went close to forging ahead when after a through ball from Bartolo towards Britto saw keeper Sean Cini reaching the ball before the striker. In the seventieth minute, substi- tute Miguel Ciantar went close for the Rangers but could only put the ball wide with a weak effort. How- ever Zebbug were to be rewarded for their persistence and in the 90th minute, from a free kick taken by Muchardi, Yesous Camilleri rose above the Tarxien defenders to head the ball into the net and hand a much needed first victory. Carlos Menendez Hevia was voted BOV Player of the Match. Tarxien Rainbows: Mintoff, Far- rugia, Caruana, Rodrigues Silva (Cini 65'), Barbosa Viana, Caruana, Sammut, Hevia Menendez, Tabone, Lopes Pereira, Santos Silva Zebbug Rangers: Rapchan Dos San- tos Morales, Paris (Pena Marquez 87'), Bartolo, Gauci, Camilleri, Borg, Britto, Galea, Muchardi, Farrugia (Ciantar 25'), Mamic Referee: Clayton Pisani EDWARD FALZON Pieta Hotspurs ............1 Floriana ......................1 A 1-1 draw between Pieta and Floriana means that both teams' position in the table remains un- changed with Pieta continuing to gather precious points in their battle against relegation. For Floriana this was a disappointing result after their dismal showing against Valletta last weekend. It was a drab encounter with lit- tle to show and not much to augur for Maltese football with many of the matches resulting to be close to mediocre. There were little or no scoring chances for most of the first half and in the early periods in the second half, with the match only coming alive in the closing min- utes. In fact, it was only two min- utes from time when Pieta were awarded a penalty after veteran Licari was brought down by the Floriana keeper. From the penalty spot, Jurgen Pisani made no mis- take. The blues however were im- mediately punished when in added time, from a corner taken by Steve Pisani, Steve Bonnici rose above the Pieta defenders and made it 1-1 with a strong header. Floriana's Matteo Piciollo was awarded the BOV player of the match. Pieta H: Cassar, Attard, Grech, Dos Santos, Pisani, Anonam, Da Silva (Cesare 79'), Da Silva, Zacarias (Licari 84'), Francis, Mi- callef (Agius 64') Floriana: Gauci, Scicluna, Cobo, Marcelina (Farrugia 59'), Pisani, Plut, Piciollo, Conor Borg (Clyde Borg 51'), Brif fa (Galea 71'), Muir, Bonnici Referee: Chris Lautier Tarxien defender fouled by Zebbug forward PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN GATT Zebbug Rangers win first match to add more woes to disappointing Rainbows
