maltatoday, SUNDAY, 22 NOVEMBER 2015 19 This is a paid advert The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet- ing (CHOGM) brings with it a programme of events to provide the public with an array of academic, informative and entertaining experiences. The provision and safeguarding of public health is a topical issue across the Commonwealth. Dur- ing the coming week, three events will tackle the matter from different perspectives. A discussion titled Social Determinants of Health organised by the Medical Association of Malta in collabora- tion with the Commonwealth Medical Associa- tion, will be held on 24 November at the Central Auditorium of the Mater Dei Hospital, between 01:00pm and 04:00pm. During this discussion, focus shall be placed on the social circumstances in which people live and age, the education they have access to as well as the impact of social and non-medical policies on health outcomes. On the other hand, a presentation by twelve researchers titled Comparing Research Agenda in Oncology shall be presented by Malta Enterprise, together with the Malta Life Sciences Park, in collaboration with the University of Malta, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. Presentations will focus mostly on research findings on Breast, Pancreatic, Brain and Colorectal Cancer and Leukaemia. The event is taking place on 23 November between 08:30am and 02:00pm at the Life Services Park, San Gwann. Attendance is free but limited space is available. In the meantime, an exhibition titled Adding Glo- bal Value – Fulfilling the Promise of a Polio-free World will be held at the InterContinental Hotel Malta between 23 and 29 November. This moving exhibition is being sponsored by Rotary Interna- tional and showcases stories behind polio and the campaign towards its eradication. Another interesting lecture taking place next week is that organised and sponsored by The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs. Former Prime Minister of Malta Dr Lawrence Gonzi shall deliver a lecture titled The Commonwealth, The European Union, The Challenges where the Commonwealth's links with the European Union as an opportunity 'to add global value' – the CHOGM Malta 2015's cho- sen theme – will be discussed. The lecture shall be held at the Aula Magna, Old University Build- ings, Valletta on 27 November at 6pm. Entrance is free but space is limited and those interested in booking a seat are to contact alex.may@oup. com. During the CHOGM week, two conferences will also be held. On 24 November, the Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Af- fairs, in collaboration with the Department of International Relations at the University of Malta, is organizing a one-day conference titled The 2015 Malta Summit – The Commonwealth's New Beginnings? Topics on the agenda include the Commonwealth and its contribution to security and identity, . Interested participants are to con- tact annelise.calleja@um.edu.mt. Another con- ference being held next week tackles the Climate Change issue which is an item on the CHOGM agenda. The CEIP – The Climate Change Confer- ence is being hosted by Commonwealth Argosy and will take place on 26 November at InterCon- tinental Hotel, St Julians between 04:00pm and 07:00pm. Patrick Woodroffe, the brains behind the light- ing design for the CHOGM Malta 2015 Opening Ceremony will be holding a Public Talk for all those interested in the field of lighting design. The talk shall be held at the MCAST Administration Main Hall on 25 November at 10:00am. The public shall also have the opportunity to experience the work of Woodroffe and over 350 local artists dur- ing the extra performances of the CHOGM 2015 Opening Ceremony. Additional performances of this spectacular event shall take place on 27 and 28 November and booking may be made directly at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. All pro- ceeds from the ticket sales, priced at €15 each, shall go to the Malta Community Chest Fund. While the Opening Ceremony will showcase the diverse facets of Maltese culture, a free concert under the name The Commonwealth Resounds in Malta will be held at the Manoel Theatre on 24 November. Various musicians, singers and dancers from Commonwealth regions will present a multi-sensory performance under the creative direction of Michelle Paris. On 26 November, St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity sees the Pan- orpheus project come to light bringing together 53 composers hailing from the different Com- monwealth members, performing flute and harp music composed by themselves. Numerous exhibitions shall also be held during these days. The Out of the Blue Photographic Exhibition by the Prince's Trust opens on 28 November at the Malta Maritime Museum in Vit- toriosa where winning photographs from the Out of the Blue competition shall be displayed for two weeks. All photographs have been taken in a Commonwealth country and showcase the value and importance of our blue planet. Pjazza Helsien in Valletta will host the Time to See Photographic Exhibition between 27 and 29 November, captur- ing the impact that avoidable causes of blindness are having across the Commonwealth and how The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubliee Trust and Standard Chartered are fighting these conditions. A few steps away, the House of Representatives will host The Commonwealth and its People: Diasporas, Identities, Memories 2015, an exhibi- tion which presents the emotions expatriates go through when establishing roots in other coun- tries. The exhibition is open from 27 November until 8 December. Pjazza Teatru Rjal, next door, will host the Student Competition Exhibition between 19 and 30 November, showcasing stu- dents' interpretation of the challenges, opportu- nities and responses faced by cities throughout the world. A collection of high quality ceramics related to the British Royal Family will be on dis- play at The Exchange Building, Valletta between 20 and 30 November under the title 'The Royal Family' – A Private Collection of Limited Edition Commemorative Bone China & Porcelain. On the 28 and 29 November, the public will also be able to view the Hereford Cathedral's 1217 ver- sion of the Magna Carta which is currently touring the globe. This is one of the only four surviving copies and will be on display at the National Li- brary of Malta in Valletta. Lastly, as of 28 Novem- ber onwards, locals and tourists will be able to follow the Commonwealth Walkway through the streets of Valletta by following the Elizabeth II Re- gina cipher on disk markers denoting landmarks in the capital of Malta. An app and brochure will enable visitors to better appreciate the historical value of the chosen landmarks within the context of the Commonwealth. Through this vast array of events, the public will have the opportunity to garner a better un- derstanding of the Commonwealth and how its work in various aspects of society is adding glo- bal value.
