44 Events maltatoday, SUNDAY, 3 APRIL 2016 Atlas Insurance restores antique business ledgers ATLAS Insurance has recently completed a restoration pro- ject of its antique business ledgers, which date back to the early 1900s. Turning the yellowed pages of the ledgers is like going back in time, with pages and pages of neat handwriting listing the insured items of past and present clients. These include some of the oldest companies in Malta, many of which are still insured with us today. The ledgers also provide a history of Atlas' previous in- carnations, as agents for Atlas Assurance, Northern Assur- ance, Commercial Union and Guardian. This was before various mergers over the years, which resulted in Atlas be- coming a local insurance com- pany in 2004. The ledgers take us back to the time of shillings and pence and reveal a number of interesting items which were related to those days, such as 'Flit' insecticide, silver tro- phies insured by the Sergeants Mess from the Royal Air Force Base in Kalafrana, f lags used for decorative purposes at Au- berge d 'Aragon, lemonade and coffee stalls, as well as cinema talking apparatus from the Olympia theatre in Strada Re- ale, Valletta. "We felt it was important to restore these ledgers as a re- minder of our roots, which run in parallel with Maltese 20th century history," said Mi- chael Gatt, Atlas CEO. "These ledgers not only provide an interesting glimpse into our company history, but also the economic history of our is- lands." This trust is heading a pro- ject for children from the age of three to ten years that live in a deprived environment that is af- fecting their education. The Blossom Foundation, which initiated this project ran a study and confirmed that several children that are registered at the St. Paul's Bay Primary School are not coping with their daily lives due to unwanted family dis- ruption and poverty. Thirty per- cent of nine hundred and sixty pupils that attend the St. Paul's Bay Primary School originate from foreign nations. Several of these pupils including Maltese require additional support such as counselling and assistance in homework due to these issues. As there is only one appointed councillor to cover over 4000 children in this district, the President's Trust has supported the Blossom Foundation's goal of appointing an exclusive Council- lor for the Primary School which has also engaged three volun- teers to assist in the project. The qualified councillor will be using techniques such as play therapy, which is an empirically support- ed intervention used to address a number of developmental issues faced in childhood. RE/MAX & Friends Founda- tion, together with other spon- sors, has pledged their support with funds that will ensure the employment of the said coun- cillor. Jeffrey Buttigieg, Board Member of the RE/MAX & Friends Foundation said "When Blossom Foundation approached us for support we felt that this ticked all the boxes and is in line with the RE/MAX & Friends Foundation's values to support such children, whom we believe are the future of our country."
